    Hello

I was installing the XP OS and it gave an error during the installation. I did a ctrl+alt+del to format and install my hard drive again. On loading, my laptop started to give a constant loud tick noise. I continued to format my hd but no success. I tried to direct install and no success again. I tried to delete the partition and same thing. Anything I tried it said some problem occurred with mbr and it could not perform the task. I decided to give a rest for 10 minutes and then try again. The noise continued but I was able to format it. After format (it a while to format than the usual), i tried to install XP OS. There was not any loud tick noise but it gave a message that it did not find hd. Now it just load the centrino intel box and go to the bios. It seems my bios or/and hard drive are screwed up.

Anyone know what happened? Is my bios screwed up? Can the OS actually change my bios??? If it is problem with my hd, where can I buy a hd for asus z70va??

    Thanks in advance!!

Your hard disk is probably on its way out if it is making loud clicking noises. That model is 4 years old or so, so you are probably better off replacing it yourself rather than calling ASUS support. You can replace it with a 2.5" PATA (not SATA) hard disk drive. You can find these on any computer retailer website.

Thanks for the reply .. i was looking at some hdd earlier. I dont have idea of the compartibility of my asus hd to find on other retailer website (I did not even know it was a PATA - thanks for the note). If there are other hd compartibles .. please let me know. I found two links but I dont know whether they work on the laptop :

I'd be very wary of that ebay listing, they don't even mention what brand it is:
Not to mention, it's Serial ATA (SATA). You need a Parallel ATA (PATA) drive otherwise known as ATA-6. You will probably want something that is rated at 7,200RPM with 8MB of cache or higher. A 5,400RPM drive will save a bit of battery life but is noticeably slower.

Here are some searches for you, in no particular order, and no specific recommendations, just for reference:

Great!! I was looking at the tigerdirect.com but I did not want to create account for one item. I was looking on newegg and trying to match the specs with the hd on tigerdirect to make sure.

    Reps up!!

@ALLurGroceries: Thanks for tigerdirect and newegg's links. Appreciate the info on PATA and RPM too. I just ordered seagate 120GB oem from your link.

@ronnieb: Thanks for the link. I will consider this retailer in the future.

Well now we know who to blame if it doesn't work :p (me) It should work fine though. All you should need is a small Philips head screw driver to install it.

Good luck, if you run into any problems just post!

And thanks for the rep :D

I just installed the HDD, and it works! Hehe .. I cant blame you. After all, the information helped a lot. Without the help, i would be considering problem on processor and motherboard too. I thought the HDD will last for 10 years or forever but you clarified everything. Anyway, i saved some valuable times and money too. The help was appreciated.
