I just got the ASUS Z63A laptop in today. And I wanted to thank the wonderful members here giving me the advice and helping me make the decision. The laptop looks great.
The only concern I have is the heat.
My configuration is not high, it is only 1.8ghz Pen M, with 1GB Ram, 80GB Fujitsu harddrive.
I've been surfing the internet for a couple of hours or so and it becomes very hot. The bottom of the laptop is very hot. The palm area is warm.
I am not concerned about the comfortableness, but I am concerned if it continues like this, and I am very heavy laptop user with about 12 hours a day on it, will this pretty quickly "burn" it? I might be overly concerned because my old Thinkpad T41 had heat problem and quit working.
So I'd like to hear input whether this is a serious problem. I did read lots of threads here on the heat issue, but when I actually touch the bottom of the laptop, I get seriously concerned.
I heard some kind of software recommended to install to control the cpu usage so that it reduce the heat. Is that a must? Why with other laptops we don't need to bother with this?
Any help and explaination would be greatly appreciated.

Notebook Hardware Control is a must, as it undervolts and keeps your laptop running cool and quiet most of the time, especially when doing simple tasks as surfing the web.
-
Cori,
Thanks for letting me know that. Could you please let me know a link to that?
And why should we do this with this laptop, while other laptops we don't need to worry about this? -
Just do a google search for centrino hardware control. IT will bring you to the web site to download it. It is hot so is pretty much any laptop its size. the bottum or pretty much and compact laptop gets hot. It should not be a concern nothing will break. You cant compare an old laptop to this. Your old laptop was probably not as powerful. and why does it bother you if the bottom gets hot? you arent keeping this on your lap are you? and as for the why dont other laptops have this issue. Try a sony s series or HP dv1000. or dell d600 they all gert real hot on the bottom. and your T41 probably had a 4200 rpm haddrive which runs much cooler. I have found the Z63a palm rest to be mildly warm and of no concern whatsoever. the bottum does get pretty hot but really only if its on a bed or your lap which is something its not really made to do. notebooks should be kept on desks.

I am not concerned of the comfortableness, and I use the coolpad with my laptop if I put it on my lap. So my concern is purely this: with this amount of heat, can it work all right for 3-5 years, average of ten hours a day or so?
My IBM laptop T41 was 1.7ghz Intel M 7200RMP. Because I was concerned with the heat, I ordered 80GB 5400RMP Fujitsu drive for this ASUS.
I did a search on centrino hardware control, and found several download links - I'm not sure which one to download. Who makes this "centrino hardware control"? Is there one that is more reputable?
Thanks for your help. -

Centrino hardware control was made just by some student or something. It works great though will lower you temps by like 10degress C. if you are using the asus power4gear when its plugged in it is running at full cpu i believe. when you install CHC put it on dynamic switching it will lower the heat. and on 6x lower it to .700 volts. you can also go to the harddrive area of the software have it spin down and put it on quiet i think it runs cooler that way. And the laptop will not burn out. The laptop is made to run a high temps around 90C max. if it gets to hot the PC would shut down. The only thing that can technically be effect by heat is like the harddrive. But i really dont even think you need to worry about it. it will last 3 years easy.

Thanks for the detailed explaination. I will install it and learn how to use it. Should I install the older 1.08 version or the latest beta 1.10 Beta?
-
Just install the latest version. if it give you problems which im sure it wont you can install the older one.
-
Thanks. I installed and it shows 46-49 c for my cpu and harddrive.
-
did you lower the cpu voltage yet and turn on dynamic switching?
-
I did selected the Dynamic Switching. And looks like once the Dynamic Switching is on, the cpu voltage is automatically lowered, such as 6x. So with this setting while surfing internet, 46 c is considered high?
-
No its not high. but on the 6X setting you have to manually lower the voltage to .700 volts did you do that?
Alot has to do with room tempeture also. -
No I did not adjust the voltage manually. I think the software did it automatically once the Dynamic Switch is on. It shows:
CPU: 798MHz, Multiplier: 6x, Voltage: 0.796V. -
You still have to lower the voltage check the box next to 6x and lower to .700 its much lower than what its at now.
