Hi there, I just purchased a V2Je, and have started to set it up. I bought a second 1GB RAM stick and put that in, no problem. Thanks for the help on that. I also reformatted the computer, to install Windows Vista Ultimate (got from work cheap....or, free). But, I am having a problem with the power settings. I've tried to find any help on this site and others, but I haven't found my exact problem, so I thought I would ask here. I put this question in the ASUS forum, because I wanted to know if any other V2Je owners (or other ASUS owners) had the same problem. If it instead needs to go in the Windows Vista forum, feel free to move it.

OK, here's the problem: my computer doesn't like to power down, either to Sleep or to Hibernate, especially. When I try to hit FN-F1 to put it to sleep, everything seems OK, but if it ever gets to the point where it hibernates, there is no way to get it back. The power button won't function, so the only way to turn on the computer is to unplug it and then plug it back in (or, if on battery, I have to take the battery out, then reinsert it, what a pain). OK, so no problem, just disable hibernation, right? Well, if I do that, then sleep ends up doing the same thing.

When I first reformatted the disc, I installed everything off the V2 drivers/applications disc besides Adobe, Norton, and ASUS Update. After I started having this problem, I thought maybe Power4Gear Extreme might be the problem, so I uninstalled that, but the same issue continued. So I have now reinstalled P4G Extreme, and am just looking for any solutions. I already installed the new BIOS (207?, the ASUS server is too busy right now, grrr). I really don't want to have to power down each time I'm done with the computer, but that seems to be the only solution I have come up with at this point. I searched the InterWebs for any solutions, and ran into this problem with Vista and Disk Cleanup, but I 'fixed' that, and it didn't help:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;929658

Has anyone run into this issue, and what, besides waiting for a Vista update/fix, can I try? Unfortunately, I am away from my laptop at this moment, or I would tell you what settings I have P4G and the default power options I have set, maybe I've just confused the system. When I get home from work here, I'll list them off. But before that, does anyone have a fix to this? Thanks for any help.

Wow, no, I hadn't heard that, I'll try it, and then get back here to let everyone know, along with my P4G settings. Thanks.

OK, here's a simple question: how do I turn off my webcam? I thought I knew how to do it, but now that I'm trying, I realize I have no clue. Thanks.

usually there is some sort fn + f# shortcut to do it. but it is different for every notebook. you should check your user manual.

Funny you should bring this up. I'm having the exact same problem on a brand-new VX2. It started doing that today, after functioning fine for a few days. I'm guessing either Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Update (gnarly programs!!!), SnagIt 8.1, or some combination of the two caused the problem.

And it did this while I was traveling, so very frustrating. I'm going to roll it back to before Snag It in a few and see if that helps any.

I think my webcam automatically shuts off. The power light only comes on when I start the webcam program, and then shuts off when I shut the program down. There is no Fn+F Key shortcut for my webcam on the V2Je, (actually just a key that starts the program, not the webcam itself) so I don't think there is actually a problem with the webcam.

As for SnagIt, I don't have that program, so I don't think that MY problem, at least. Adobe, maybe, but I didn't download it off the driver disk, and haven't downloaded it, except for an activeX control. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know, I'm getting desperate here. If something doesn't shake out, I might have to reformat and just try again. Looking forward that THAT one, someone please help.

hrmmm...if i remember correctly, in the past, video drivers were the culprit for hibernation problems with the w3j. perhaps try changing your video drivers?

Not sure if this is relevent since you're using Vista, but XP had an issue where Hibernation and Sleep didn't work if you had > 1 GB of RAM (though Vista with < 1 GB RAM? Probably not too good).

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a Vista counterpart yet. Maybe the fix was incorporated into Vista already and you're getting something else...

Thanks for all your help, I'm really thinking this is an issue with Vista, not ASUS or any programs. I will try to install those hotfixes and see if it works, but for now, I might have found a fix for me, at least.

I decided to try one last thing before I gave up for the night. I had a 4GB USB drive (Cruzer micro 4.0 GB) plugged in for ReadyBoost, and never thought twice about it. So, I tried unplugging the ReadyBoost drive, and power modes started working. Now, that is completely stupid, Vista should actually use ReadyBoost the way it says it does, but in reality, I would more than likely remove those drives before moving the laptop anyway. This might not be the complete fix, though, because I am sure that other people are able to use their ReadyBoost and recover from a sleep cycle. Whatever, I'll just refrain from using any boost, and see if that stops my problem. Thanks to you all who tried to help me through this, I'll keep everyone updated if the problem comes back, which, as I'm sure like everything with Vista, it will. Talk to you later.

I don't know if you've seen the other V2JE thread, but now there are three of us with identical problems but not computers!

I also think that Vista is to blame here. All the glitches we're suffering from, and I've seen helluva lot more, like screen flashing completely black, or total crashes, suggest that this is still beta software. I have no clue what those 1 million testers did. Anyway, I sent an e-mail to Justin asking for his intervention. :(

OK, my sleep/shut-down problem was solved by system restore. I hope you can solve your problem soon too. :)

I had this problem on my V2je that i am using to write this message right now. I am assuming your using the drivers from the V2je driver cd they gave you. The VGA driver for it is poorly made, when i first realized this mine would go to sleep and then wake itself up and lock or freeze. Upgrade your graphic card driver with the ATI driver with mod tool * i am currently using CCC 7.9* and it will sleep. THe video card driver provided on the disk isnt S3 compatable..

Also on another note make sure that your network, wireless mouse *the one included* isnt set to wake up vista you can change this on the device settings

    =)
