I've had my W5a for a little over a week now, and I've configured it to my liking for the most part. I've also started taking it around with me around campus, toting it around in the nifty sleeve that came with it. My experience with it has been very pleasing compared to my last laptop (actually, "luggable" would be the better term since it was ~13 pounds). This W5a is sleek, light, and fun to use.

However, as of this past Friday, when I whipped out my laptop to use it at a library and powered it on, for the first time I noticed a low-volume yet high-pitched sound coming from around the CPU fan/vent area of the laptop, a sound I definitely haven't heard before. It was quite audible in the silence of the library, but the thing is, I've been in other silent places before and this laptop has been very silent. A few reboots and about 12 hours later, I'm posting here curious if anyone else has had this problem or has any possible resolutions for it, or if my ears just became suddenly really sensitive. The noise is driving me insane.

I already checked it if it was related to either the DC or AC battery, but the noise is always there as long as the unit is on, whether the battery is in or not or the AC plug is in or not. The sound doesn't start right away when the unit is powered on. It comes out about half a second after powering the unit on, which is after the fan does its initial "loud spin."

    So... any thoughts please?

i dunno why but i got that sound too with my M5n but this sound applicable when im using the DC mode and using full throttle of my cpu, but when throttling down the cpu on DC mode the sound is still there but not that loud and the sound kinda like a morse code isn't it... its kinda annoying but i don't really know what caused this until now..

That's the fan........ the fan in the W5 / M5 is small in diameter..... there are a lot of blades on the fan..... the blades are at steep angles... when you're in dc power and are running in super performance mode, the cpu is running at full speed all the time... so the fan is running at the top speed to remove the heat. When you couple a smaller diameter with more and steeper blades (they're trying to get more CFM out of the smaller fan).... but basically with all that combined you'll get more "noise" just from the blades physically moving through the air.

ermm... i've set my fan to off with speedfan and FYI this problem does exist way before i tried to set my fan to off.

it doesn't affect me that much but it would be good to know what is that high pitch kind of morse code sound really is

my guess is that it could be the hard drive... does this happen only when the hard drive is being accessed?
