I've had my ASUS G1S-A1 for about 5months now. It's got the standard setup, nothing has been altered. Recntly(past week) i started hearing this high-pitched-whirling noise. Putting my ear to the bottom of the laptop i think it's coming from the HD. Anyone know if this is regular? or if there's a way i can check if there is a problem? thanks in advance!

Are you sure it's not the classical Dual Core CPU whine? Does it go away / stutter if you do things like run CPU-intensive tasks, scroll the browser window? If so, it's the CPU whine.

Otherwise it may be the HDD, or the fan. If the former, I suggest back up your data IMMEDIATELY. Run a SMART test tool from the HDD manufacturer to see whether the drive is about to fail.

if if's the fan, it could use a cleaning probably. Or an exchange :)

Did you upgrade your bios to v300 by any chance?

A bunch of us started hearing that high pitched sound when we upgraded our bios to v300. I had to downgrade the bios back to 205 via the utility located in the bios startup (not winflash).

Yeah i updated the BIOs with Asus LiveUpdate. i think it's the HDD cause i put my ear to where i think the HDD is and that's where the noise seems to be coming from. I don't know what that check was that you mentioned, but i'll see what i can do.

I'm experiencing something similar right now. It sounds exactly like the OP said, but I noticed that it almost immediately went away after I plugged the power supply in. I only hear it after ~15 mins without PS and it immediately fades to nothingness after plugging it back in.

The drive health test that came with HDTune showed nothing. Plus, I had this first last week and immediately backed up my data then. Everything has been running fine since then though.

    Any ideas, anyone?

I think this is the core duo CPU whine...

My G1s also had this whining noise around the right side of the laptop. Under close examination, I found out that the noise is actually coming from the mx518 mouse that came with the laptop. Putting the bottom of the mouse to my ear, I can hear the noise coming from it. :)

Thanks for the input, E.B.E., but I don't think it coud possibly be the CPU making noises since the CPU is located in the upper left hand corner of the case and those noises really come directly from the HD.

I know that the mouse makes sounds too, but this can't be it as well since I did not even have my mouse with me, KiwiBoy :)

All I can say is it starts after 15 mins and immediately goes away after plugging the power cord in.

Hmm. Maybe it's some low-power HDD mode then? You can control the HDD to some extent with NHC, I believe, but NHC has some compatibility problems with new computers. Maybe you can try it out, see if you can disable low-power modes for the HDD.

Thank you very much for the input, guys. I doubt I'll really try to get the nose out of the way if it does not seem to be dangerous. I was just wondering.
