I just noticed a really high beep. I believe this happens when the HDD has nothing todo. FOr example if i play a song in winamp (turned volume off) i do not hear the beep. If i start only a game turn volume off i do not hear the beep too even if i alt+tab.

If i STOP (not pause) the music in winamp the sound will come back after some seconds.

The Sound comes from the top right down under the keyboard.

uhh, I am not sure any HD's have a beeping feature built in, I could be wrong.

The only beep that I know of in a computer is built in to the motherboard, and it simply could be going crazy or you have sticky keys on (press shift 5 times fast). Disable the beep through sticky keys.

I hope this helps, and you dont have a psycho machine. :D JK bud.

Maybe a bios setting as well, that is also easy to correct.

    EDIT:
I did a little bit of internet research (sounds unrelyable, but worth the precaution) that is not in your favor. One person said that the beeping noise is the sound of the hard drive dying/overheating, and is telling you to back up all data immediatly before it dies.

Guys this has been discussed many times over and the high pitched beeping is not your harddrive, high pitched CLICKS are your harddrive, but the beeping is your chipset/cpu/capacitors, etc on your motherboard.

This is completely normal so don't worry about it.

If it gets to the point where it is so loud that you can hear it in another room then of course by all means contact your reseller, but it is normal.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Androo, that edit is the best...I wish all the components in our computers and laptops were so forthcoming and thoughtful as to warn us like that.

I hope your laptop hasn't been out of your possession or line of sight for any length of time, If it has and It's beeping, you might want to RUN!!!!

To be serious though, Shampoo is most likely correct, in that the source of the beep or noise you're hearing is originating from your Motherboard and not the hard drive. If It's that loud or bothersome and persists, then have a local technician take a look at it for their opinion before you send it all the way into Asus for repair. Good luck :)

PS, when you have a definitive answer or find a solution, let us know about it please.

Ok first of all, I already mentioned that the motherboard is the main source for beeping, and no you dont need a techie to fix the beeping, because that is software related and it can be easily disabled entirely. You can either fix it through sticky keys or the bios settings (which are more effective)

Next, maybe I wasnt clear when I described the HD as "beeping." Looking back, I guess the best description is high pitched spring like pings, like shampoo said earlier. This funny enough should tell you that your hard drive really is "going to explode." I know you joke about it, but I have seen it happen, as well a malfunction in a CD rom drive.

It sounds like a gunshot when it explodes, and small pieces of the hardware can break off of the hard drive, although unlikely. The high pitched clicking occurs because the internals (spindle, needle and disks) are improperly functioning (rubbing into each other too hard or improperly) and are eventually going to break.

Of the two, the cd rom drive was much worse because the cd that was inside absolutly exploded into a million pieces while the hard drive was more of a more sturdy piece of broken hardware. It was actually quite amusing because it was not my pc, but it makes quite a mess, and causes quite a bit of alarm in each case.

Although this is rare, it should be taken into consideration none the less.

I was just kidding...and as far as me mentioning a tech...we can guess what his issue most likely is, but we can't know for sure...all I was saying is If It continues to persist, doesn't sound normal and is really bothering him, then he should get a second opinion, maybe It is something else, we can't know for sure. Getting that second opinion could confirm one thing, or discover another...and If It's really bothering him, telling him It's something normal, when we really don't know 100% for sure If it is or isn't, isn't going to help him. That's all I was trying to say. There's only so much you can do over a forum, and sometimes It's really hard to actually convey what one is hearing or experiencing in text to another...which then has a huge impact on the advice and help that is given...that's all I'm saying. It can never hurt to get a second opinion when you're not sure of something! Good luck :)

If your not experiancing any stability issues...eg bsod, then it is likely to be as anadoo said, that is sticky keys....maybe one of your keys on the keyboard is getting stuck alittle, triggering the sound.
Alternately the only other beeping sound that I know of that comes from the m/b has to do with diagnositics tests run at startup. Certain patterns of beeps will tell you what the problem is, eg bad ram.
But since your pc starts up...its most likely a stuck key
