    Hitachi or Seagate

    I have a 7200 rpm Hitachi HDD that is rather hot and (to my mind) is quite noisy; at least I did not have this with my previous laptop

    I was seraching the forum to find whether the noise / heat comes from the rpm or the make of HDD

    I would like to hear your opinions on this issue. What is the best / quietest brand according to you. Stay with the 7200 or go to 5400 rpm??

    Ive heard some good things about segate, and have always found their desktop drives to be of very good quality....they also seem to be really pushing the laptop drive area at the moment which is always a good sign

    The Seagate Momentus is the fastest 7200RPM harddrive available.

    Here is a review that takes the noise of the 2 drives very seriously and infact the Hitachi comes out on top..

    Dont buy a hitachi. i have owned both. the hitachi is noisy runs hot and uses more battery. the seagate in using now is so quite i dont even hear it. and run no hotter than a 5400 rpm drive and uses about the same power. ask any of the notebook dealers around here this is a talked about topic and seagate always is the one recommended by people who tried both.

    According to this review the hitachi runs longer on battery. But the hitachi is 2 degrees warmer during load. They have the same temperature when idle.

    They're both good drives, the Seagate has the advantage in my book, not just for the longer warranty but for reliability. The temp differences are very minor.

    The hitachis are also know for their loud clicking sounds. they are not bad drives they are bargin drives. there are two different seatgate 7200rpm drives. the never version gets better battery life lower heat and power consumption. which did the use in the test. I dunno though i had both and stuck with the seagate. if you want see reviews go to newegg and read the reviews on the hitachi drive. lots of people complain about sound. in fact you can read the review of the v6va on this site where someone had a hitachi drive and i believe they said they first thing they noticed was a clicking. But not sure dont remember.

    there was a thread awhile pack that posted a link that compared the two, in this comparison, the 7k100 hitachi always outperformed the seagate but the seagate was quieter,etc.

    it all just comes down to what you think is loud, i don't find my Hitachi drive to be loud but it does make a tiny bit of noise, doesn't bother me so i will go with the Hitachi. which i have seen in more than two tests to be a slightly better performer. and there is actually a sound control program on hitachi's website to help with that i believe.

    what about heat? does one mfg have more efficient (cooler) drives than another? I'm more interested in 5400RPM though.

    I personally have very good experiences with Seagate. Seagate's
    drives are very quite.

    I have never had a seagate, but I have had a hitachi, two actually, quite good, no complaints.
