Is it normal to log on and find that the desktop is missing? What I mean that is all I see is a white screen with the Asus logo in the middle. Bottom toolbar is still there and I can access files, but no shortcut icons on the desktop. Laptop seems to go into a sleep-like mode after only a minute of inactivity.

    G51VX-RX05, by the way.

Try right clicking the desktop, go to arrange icons and see if 'Show Desktop' is checked off.

Actually I think I figured it out already. It must have been the "low battery" mode. Plugged it in and everything is normal now. I guess it was a bit unexpected since the last time I checked the battery should have been almost fully charged.

I think you were on presentation mode, it hides all the icons on the desktop so no one can see all your stuff when connected to a projector or whatnot

No, Zoey was in battery saver or quiet office mode while on battery. When in those modes and unplugged, the desktop will not show.
