Personally Im thinking the first one as though the CPU is slower the GPU is majorly superior. (And it strains his budget less) However he made a point that a 2.13 ghz CPU might not even meet minimum game requirements within a year or so.

    Thoughts?

The first Asus comes with a P7450 model CPU and NVidia 9800M GS, I would be shocked if the CPU did not meet minimum requirements in a year. This system is in my opinion the better system for someone who is gaming, and the price is really good as well.

the g50vt-x5 is better than the g50v. the 9700m gt is a weak card compared to the 9800m gs. and for the extra 200 you could get a p8600 of newegg.

Im getting the X5 and when the warranty is up im probably gonna swap the P8600 i was looking at the cost and its about 200 now, hopefully cheaper down the road.

Most games prior to crysis, state the speed for a single core. I dont have anything after FEAR Perseus Mandate so i cant look to see if their listing recomended speeds for multi core processor yet.

I think its more a case of new games including "multicore" support so that a quad or duo will help increase performance. The GPU tho is the most important component and will bottleneck in new games first even with a modern 2ghz core 2 duo.

Although there are exceptions such as the bad pc port of GTA4 that is known to sap processor power. Go with your first choice if its the G50 with 9800M which I think it is. Also the Asus G50v allows you to bump up the processor speed with software that comes with it called direct console. Should bring it to around 2.5ghz which is more than enough for gaming. In a year you can swap out the CPU for a faster one and double your ram to 8gb for little $$

Truth. Although I wouldn't call it future-proof by any stretch, and may be a bit more difficult to swap later on down the road, it's certainly worth what you get out of it. Though, don't expect to plug away at Crysis on high settings (one reason why I'm considering to bargain off my X5, but we'll see).
