OK, don't know if that was their intention, but Asus just made this announcement...if you buy their motherboard you will be entered into a contest where you could win...yes, Asus G1...the ultimate gaming notebook, according to Asus. They list it as $1799 value along with the specs:
G1 -- The Ultimate Gaming Notebook
▪
15.4 WSXGA+ 1680*1050 256K Color Max
▪ Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 Processor with 4MB On-Die L2 Cache
▪ NVIDIA GeForce Go 7700 512MB
▪ Extreme Gaming Chassis and Keyboard
▪ SATA 160G 5400 RPM
▪ 1.3 MegaPixel Video Camera with LED
▪ ASUS Direct Messenger
▪ The Best Warranty in the Industry
Not a bad value, but definitely nothing ultimate about it, I think. Here is the link, guys, check for yourself: http://usa.asus.com/event/Buy_Win/buy_n_win.html
What do you think?

Those are some awesome specs. Holy cow!

At $1799 USD I guess I can add the G1P to my list of notebook possibilities along with the V1Jp and the MBP. Although the G1P may well be too heavy for my needs.
I guess the green LEDs for the G1P does stand for nVidia and the red LEDs in the G2P for ATI. Hopefully they'll boost the specs of the G2P since a 1440x900 resolution and a X1700 doesn't seem to cut it against the G1P's 1680x1050 and Go 7700. Although the GPU choice may be okay if the X1700 is clocked a lot higher than the Go 7700, and the announced X1700 clock speeds are very aggressive 460MHz core/ 495MHz memory. The thing is, the only ATI GPU faster than the X1700 is the X1800 which is beginning to look a bit old against the Go 7900 and Go 7950. -

I told you The G2p would be higher end performance than the W2p, the G1's specs are high for it's size.... especially for that price point..... The G2's specs are bound to be ridiculous.
Note the MCE OS...... leads me to believe this unit will have a tv tuner in it.... Asus won't make an MCE system without one... -
Hmm, this is like a a8js in 15.4" package (higher res screen, more weight) with a slicker build quality. In fact, the a8js woud may outperform this unit playing games in their respective native resolutions barring some extra tinkering on the part og the g1p.

OMFG! /cry! this thing is a BEAST!, unfortunately i'm looking into something that is more discrete, more battery life, thinner and lighter, but still being able to game well, like the V1JP and MBP with C2D.
I am school student so having a flashing light laptop would not be ideal plus if it is heavy or significantly thicker that wouldn't be so good for portability.
In my opinion this is a GREAT DTR for someone who likes to game and travel without worrying too much about portability and batterylife.
GJ ASUS on creating an awsome specced machine, and not going overboard with it and it's pricing!
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
indeed. the use of a 160gb HD is quite sweet!! -

In regards to the TV tuner, I believe the product manuals, on the G2P at least, do mention ports for a TV tuner. Seeing that the G1P look to be available for Christmas and before Vista, including MCE is probably ASUS's way to allow an upgrade path to Vista Home Premium rather than Vista Business if they went with XP Pro. -

Well... I can say this... I doubt it'll really be "out" before christmas... this is a contest and we're probably looking at February before anything ships out or the model is really available here for sale. This is just Asus' way of approaching their gamer base by linking their desktop enthusiast mobo's with the new G series laptops... and a good way to do so as well..... It also certainly doesn't hurt the sales of those motherboards either.
We'll have to see exactly what goes down.... I just wouldn't count a purchase prior to the end of the year... -
I think Asus usually takes a LONG time after announcing to actually release the product, in my opinion.
It looks great, and the specs are great, and price is perfect. This laptop will definitely give Dell's XPS and Alienware a run for their money. -
IF this were on sale in the middle of october when I ordered my a8js
I would have seriously had to think about coming up with $200 more dollars. Definitely.
But its going to be on the market months later so its hard to compare. The machines down the road always have to be better or who would want them? -
!! been waiting for a while for at least an announcement of a 15.4 with a 7700. Though...it doesn't state Ram, tho im guessing 1gig since its a "gaming" machine. Is that the only link that shows any info about it, i cant find anything else. hmm 7200 rpm hdd would be nice, i wouldnt mind lower space for it. Good thing thats always changeable
-
too bad it's going to take too long to reach the stores in Belgium.
I'm currently looking at this F3JP(-AP041M/Core 2 Duo T7200 2048MB DDRII 160GB SATA ATI X1700 512MB 15.4" WXGA MCE2005 )
and I figure it offers the same performance. (note that even this model is not deliverable yet at this time so i'll still have to wait at least another month! :'( )
What do you guys think? will the G7700 512mb really wipe the floor with the X1700 512mb?
if its only minimal it's not worth waiting for imho... (the FJ looks really classy aswell anyhow) -

Here's a comparison of GPU's from my testing and what i've read.
X1600 to X1700 there was a 3% increase in performance, 1850 to 2000 points in 3DMark06 respectively.
Go 7600 to Go 7700 there was an increase in 500 points, 2000 to 2664 points in 3DMArk06 respectively, I ran 3DMark06 on the A8js and got 2664, and i was simply amazed!.
So yes the 7700 is faster than the X1700 but we don't know how battery life was affected by the X1700. -
You say there was a 3% increase in performance 1850, 2000 respectively in 3dmark06. Isn't that really a ~8% increase?

Its almost a 30% increase in 3dmark 05. from 3k to 4k.

WOW. No I am attracted to this machine instead of the V1j or W3j!!! Look at this picture I found. It's build quality looks like a rock!!! Incredible cosmetics (in my opinion)!!!

EDIT: oh..... The website above says the battery life is only 33 min!!! Hopefully that is a mistake! The viewing angles look poor as well.
There is a txt file in this .zip that shows much of the technical specs:

EDIT EDIT EDIT: Ok, scratch my first edit. The battey life is 3 hours and 33 minutes!!! 3DMark 06: 2,637!!!!
Yup, this is the laptop that I have been waiting for! -

OMG! WOAH! Thanks! This is amazing!
Weight 3kg = 6.6lbs (Just like the ASUS Z71v)
Dimensions 14.2" x 11.2" x 1.3" <- i believe this is front end, if this is the thickness of the back, i woud be happy!
Well one thing i also want to know is, does this have a Multi-bay? If so, woah! I might just want this over the V1J.
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
my 3dmark 06 score of 3096 oc is somewhere in the x800 range
3dmark 06 same cpu 7600 to 7700 shows over 33% difference, or its over 150% as fast.
no real data on the x1700 outside of china
Ive seen tests that show it is actually slower than the x1600. they were worthless tests though in chinese meant to sell the 7700
however just to base it on a low estimate the 7700 is like 150% of the speed of the x1700 they put in the a8jp -
PROPortable Company Representative
Yep... 6.6lbs... it's nothing to really "Whoa" about.... it's the weight of the Z71v, which was heavy for a 15.4"... but for what it'll do, I think it's the weight we should have expected..... now, the G1 - the 17".... that's another story... that'll be close to 9lbs.

One thing that astounds me is that the G1P ca nget 3.5 hours of batterylife while the GPU 7700 is better than the X1700. We don't know how the X1700 affects battery life but but i'm sorta dissapointed already about the V1J since it using a X1700 but may yeild lower battery life and will be lower in performance than the 7700.
However, I prolly still pick up the V1J unless the G1P have a mutli-bay or if either of them finds their way to NA, LOL.
Thanks,

I'll tell you another cool thing about this notebook is the trend it hopefully indicates in Asus' cosmetic design principles. That black and gray two-tone look can't fade quick enough into fashion oblivion as far as I'm concerned.
-
Wow, after taking a look at the A6J review, it looks almost identical to the G1 in terms of layout. The keyboards are the same except for the green WASD keys on the G1. All the ports are placed at the same place. The only difference is probably the material used.
-
errr the specs are ok, nothing amazing imo
and especially considering it will probably come out 3-4 months down the line, its going to be decent but not spectacular at all
just my 2c -
-
function keys in the correct spots = definite plus
-
Anyone know what the G1 is made out of? If it's going to be made out of Magnesium alloy, carbon fiber, aluminum, tell me.
-
I think carbon fibre. I'm not sure.
Why did they switch the function keys anyway? I always use CTRL - C and CTRL - V all the time on my friend's laptop and I always go: "Why didn't it copy?" and I realize I'm pressing Function.
-
you can see the lcd lid is actually aluminum.
It has a carbon fiber pattern printed on it just to confuse you. -
To me that looks just like normal A6 with a nice top chassis overhaul
, the bottom is 100% the same as a A6. The power buttons are also from the A6 and so too are the audio DJ buttons. So who knows what materials they use....
And if you look at the link, it says the battery life was 3h33 not just 33 min
insane -
Hi folks I bought an Asus G1s three weeks ago...
It was working ok today morning, but now it didn't loads the BIOS POST animetion...
