Alright I've really been looking into the s96j and the x1600 acer 5672, but have been leaning towards the acer because of all the stuff I hear about the s96j grainy screen. My question is does the graininess I keep hearing about really impact the quality of the screen? Is it really that noticible and does it make that much difference? Do movies and games drop in picture quality because of this issue?

The screen on the S96J looks better than the Acer 5672 screen rofl. Some people on this ASUS forum are here to put down the company and b itch. I think the screen will do for most open minded people who aren't obsessed.. The quality sure as hell beats Acer's, even if it's the lowest end laptop by ASUS.

I Hope you enjoy it mate, dont think this further.

Yeah, no matter what Asus owns Acer, and anyways the grainyness appears only on some and its a driver issue.

It appears on ALL, and it IS NOT a driver issue. It appears to be an issue with the mobility radeon X1600, ALL MODELS WITH THE X1600 HAVE THIS. THE SCREEN HAS BEEN PROVEN TO BE FLAWLESS.

No. Almost 99% of the time I forget that it is there. This screen is BEAUTIFUL. I would definately recommend the S/Z96 over the acer, and I would recommend the Z96 over the S96.

Read my review for the Z96. It includes info on why I chose the Z96, and some stuff about the screen. LOTS of pictures.

I dont know about all. I dont really deal with anything other then asus but i know all 3 models asus has with x1600 have the same trait. w3j, s96j, z96j. All 3 have different screens. All 3 if removed screen and repalced with another from last year still retain the effect. Leading me to deduce that any laptop with x1600 has the same. the fact that adjusting hue or contrast like someone else said makes the problem better or go away also says its driver related (however that was the case with ghosting on the z70va which was a physical defect, actually a result of a poorly calibnrated screen). The fact is ou of almost 80 units sold (mostl z96j) we have had zero returns. If this was really an issue people would have returned atleast one. This says to me the people that are complaining should be returning otherwise they are completely neurotic and extremely picky. Why would you keep a screen that you completely hate? As i have said all along the z96j has an awesome screen that can be used in any way you want. Same with the s96j tho obviously the higher res screen looks even better. If you say you cant do photo or video editing on it then you havent really tried becuase i can just as easily on my desktop lcd actually better because they are brighter.
