G1S is arriving soon and curious how you are removing your bloatware. Are you just going into 'add/remove' programs and uninstalling from there? I see the list of bloatware that should be removed, but just curious what route (other than reformatting) you took.

    Thanks :)

I do a fresh install as soon as I get the computer. Grab a free Vista Anytime Upgrade disc and follow this guide.

I prefer this over add/remove because I can repartition, and I can absolutely know that the computer is as clean as possible. If you follow the guide, it will take about 2 hours, most of it waiting, and you won't even have to call Microsoft to reactivate vista.

For my G1S, I just uninstall the bloatware - not much to begin with, doesn't take hours.

The problem with that is for some reason, the performance of Vista using either the hidden partition or recovery DVD is pretty terrible. If you're still on the install that was pre-installed with the G1S it's much faster.

Unfortunately, uninstalling all the bloatware when you re-install Vista does not improve the slowdown/problems.

And you do not[b/] need a Windows Anytime DVD to install a fresh unbloated Vista install. All you need to do is use the Recovery DVD, and shut the computer down when it asks you for the driver disc. That will prevent any bloatware from being installed. But you will need to install the drivers (and programs) you need or find useful afterwards.

I'm using a Vista install using those methods right now, and it's incredibly fast.

    (1) I'm using the install that came with the G1S and I just uninstalled stuff i didn't need.

You're saying that if I use the recovery DVD and manually install the drivers/programs to make it identical to (1) above later it will run faster?

    Got benchmarks?

I probably wasn't clear but.. You should be fine with the pre-installed Vista you are using now.

The slowdown after using the recovery disc or hidden partition is very noticeable, even with normal desktop usage. Even with proper uninstallation, and CCleaner, AND defragmentation the slowdown is very noticeable.

I have no idea why this only happens after using the recovery dvd/partition and not with the pre-installed Vista. It should be the same since they contain the same drivers/programs.

Hopefully they'll fix it with a new version of their recovery or support DVD (heck there could be a better version out already that I didn't receive).

As for benchmarks, there was about a 200-250 point difference in both 3dMark06 and PCMark05. Again, this is with the recovery DVD/partition, not the preinstalled Vista.

Well what do you know...I managed to mess up my C: partition
Thank goodness for partitions - I still have my data.
Guess I'll be doing a clean install after all! :D
