Ive just downloaded the bios updates from asus, the W3J207AS Bios and AFLASH2_DOS_060426 Bious Utility, and I don't know how to install them. Could you please tell me on how to. Also, are there any other recent updates to W3J?

    Thank you in advance.

Not sure about AFLASH, but usually there's a utility from ASUS called Winflash installed by default. You just run it, point it to the bIOS file, and it should update automatically.

aflash2 is for a floppy drive. You use it with a dos bootable disk. Obviosly you dont have that. For your w3j you need WINflash not aflash. Winflash is a windows based util.

    1. Check if the bios "update" is really an update (i.e. version is larger than what you already have). You can boot into bios and check the version (F2 during boot), or use a program like BiosAgent.
    2. Check the list of fixes / additions for the new bios, see if you need them. cf. the rule: don't fix something that isn't broken. If they are e.g., all related to supporting Merom, you probably don't need them. If there are e.g., ACPI issues fixed/improvements added, then I strongly recommend you update the bios.

Once you decided you want to flash the new bios:

I think the best way to do it is install via the BIOS option itself, if you have one. No OS is running => safer, simpler, update process. My V6J has such a bios option. You just need to have the (unzipped) bios file (512 kilobytes in size) on a plugged-in USB drive, or on a FAT32 partition (unsure about this last option, USB works for sure).

Check your BIOS options (F2 during boot) for an Update / Flash Bios option. Use it if you have it. Make sure you have your battery in your notebook, you do NOT want to have a poweroff during the BIOS update. :)

    Hope this helps, E.B.E.

Well... yes. Assuming you want to flash a compatible BIOS file and not the W3J BIOS, that is. :)

I posted this in the stickied grainy thread

I have a z96j and have noticed the graininess issue since I got it last august. It is not until now that I have figured to fix this minor annoyance.

I tried using the winflash ultility. All seems well until the the boot up where it says, "unable to open the selected file" or something of that sort. Is there anyone here that wants to help me out?

    thanks in advance.

Like I said in previous posts, use the BIOS flash utility in the BIOS. I think you can press F4 during POST to access it. Otherwise, it's somewhere in the BIOS options. You can navigate to the folder where the unzipped BIOS file is placed, choose it, and it will be flashed.

If it's a date issue (trying to install an older version) or something like that, go to Start -> Run -> Type: "winflash /nodate" -> say OK and try again. Good luck.
