Is there a setting I can change this or am I doomed forever?

Go to Control panel and look around in power options. Should be an option where you can choose what happens when you close your lid.

generally on asus. at the bottom of the screen, near the time display, you will see the battery power icon, click on it.
a little popup will appear, click the text "more power options", it will take you to the appropriate screen, then in that window, in the left most pane, it will say "what should my computer do when the i close the lid", click on that...

    hope that helped
