I purchased a G1S about a year ago and naturally it was equipped with Vista Ultimate (32-bit). Now I've upgraded to 3gb of RAM and buying another 2gb stick a few days and I'd like to switch to 64-bit Vista Ultimate.
What would be the easiest way to get an x64 Vista image somewhere? (Please don't say [some random torrent site])

Well if you want to do it legally you would have to buy a retail license or copy of vista. The OEM version that came with your laptop is only good for one version or the other.
The cheapest legal way to do it would be to get an upgrade disk and not the full install version and just upgrade to 64bit Vista. -
Uh, so 32-bit and 64-bit keys are not good for one another? That kind of sucks, I would've picked x64 of course if I would've been given the option for it. I've understood that for example Dell owners have gotten a 64-bit media by just calling Dell, not needing a new serial key or anything, but judging by this my OEM key would not even work if I managed to get a 64-bit copy and install it?

It may work, I have heard people say it does and others say it wont. But no matter what the case it goes against the licensing terms of OEM thus it would not be legal.

The key you are issued is good for both x86 and x64, just have to find a x64 vista ultimate disc. I've heard some people having success just calling their manufacturer and saying that you need a x64 disc. Good luck.

I disagree.
I have check with my friend who work in Lynnbay.com, a reseller of Asus notebook. Asus notebook is using bios lock. Other company's windows Vista x64 bits recovery disc will not work on Asus notebook.
You have to buy an retail license unless you can talk to the store who sell you the Asus notebook and buy a Windows Vista x64 bits OEM license. However, to reinstall the system with an OEM license need to be very careful. Your Asus notebook recovery disc will not work now. You need to install everything manually.
Good Luck! -
