For some reason MS Outlook is always in my "processes" list whenever I start up the laptop. I don't believe it was there before. I noticed it when I can hear my fans and HDD on overdrive. Talk about a resource hog. I have to continue to disable it in the task manager. Can anyone tell me how to stop it from running in the background automatically?

    Thanks much.

    Hit windows button+r
    Type msconfig
    Check the starting processes list
Remove MS Outlook process (might be named unintuitively)
    Save and reboot

Alternatively, it maybe as simple as this:

Check your Programs>Startup and delete the Outlook shortcut if it's there.

    Thanks for the replies.

The first thing I did was go into msconfig. However I could not see Outlook anywhere in the startup. Could it be listed under something else?

    Thanks

    Check DTX's idea.

Otherwise look at hkey....run (well I don't know the exact location, google for it :) ) but all that's there should appear under msconfig as well.

You could try jv16powertools, they read the same list of applications but sometimes they display the application name in a more intuitive fashion. Check my XP Guide, the Appendix for a download link.
