Hi all,
I'm new to this forum but thanks to all I've read here I decided to buy the Asus G50-X1 as my first gaming laptop to primarily play World of Warcraft and some other games.
My question is this: What settings can I change, outside of game settings, to get better fps in WOW? I thought for sure this laptop would be able to play wow at max settings but even with most of my settings changed to medium high and Shadows turned off and terrain distance low, I'm only getting around 20-30 fps in the woods. I'm really bummed.
Do you think switching to XP would help? I've removed the vista gadgets that were in the side bar but otherwise left the computer as is. I'm also currently running the game in full screen mode. I don't want to have to turn everything down because that's not why I bought this laptop.
Any ideas would be really appreciated.
Thanks!

You can try upgrading your graphics drivers, the latest for vista 64 can be found here:
http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/179.28/179.28_notebook_winvista_64bit_beta.exe
You should most certainly be able to max WoW @ native res AFAIK. But I don't play it, so don't trust me... -
Hello and Welcome here
Are you playing when the laptop is plugged in ? That can make a difference in GPU performance, upgrading the Graphics drivers can also increase performance. -
Update those drivers, I play wow on this same Laptop at all max settings and get ~90fps.
-
Thanks for the reply guys. I didn't think to update my drivers because I just bought the laptop less than a week ago and thought they'd have the latest drivers preinstalled. I'm not super duper computer savy btw
I will give it a try tonight and keep my fingers crossed.
ALLurGroceries, what does "AFAIK" mean?
mujtaba, I was playing with the ac plugged in when the fps was slow. I haven't tried playing WOW with the battery power yet. -

Ah, sorry, internet slang... AFAIK = "as far as I know"
Updating those drivers should do the trick! good luck -
Also make sure you've got the power plan set to "power 4 gear high performance" so nothing is downclocking.
-
When laptop is not plugged to power source, which means it uses battery, it doesn't use all of it's power which is mostly noticeable while gaming. Plug it into power source when you game.
As others suggested, find someone who knows how to upgrade the graphic drivers.
Also keep in mind that Vista requires more RAM memory in games than XP. Which means, if you need 1GB for XP, you will need 1.5 of 2GB on Vista. -
If you wanna play around with the graphics settings after you download the latest driver, read these forums:

or

Always remember to back up your settings before doing it. -
thanks for the responses. I updated to the latest drivers and the situation was still the same.
Daskid, I'll take a look at those links and muck around with them.
The laptop has 4 gigs of ram...that should be plenty right? -
Is there a demo for this game or anything that I can install on my laptop and show that it'll run it fine? Cause I can play COD4 & COD:W@W at 1680x1050 with ALL settings completely maxed and get 70FPS, 40 in combat. Im pretty sure I could run WOW at 1680x1050 with flying colors.

That laptop should be able to play wow at 60ish fps with out an issue. Are you trying to play in Windowed mode?
EDIT
How full is the server your playing on? I have noticed that while i'm playing on Lothar mid day when the population is low/medium i get 20ish fps on my desktop (it's old) , and while the server is full/queued i adverage 5-10fps. Just a thought. -
I play wow on dark iron sever and I play with it max settings. Runs very smooth and I have been very happy.

Hi i get similar issue with wow maxed out i get about 20fps, however i'm in window mode running the full res with the X2 from new egg which is 1680x1050, but i get about 40-50 in non-windowed, is there a way to improve windowed performance?

Hey I'm new too I just bought the X5 any hardcore raiders here that can attest to the performance in Naxx 25 on max? I'm in the top raiding guild on my server, and had a killer home machine, I bought the X5 as it was the best under a K, but I need to know if I can still safely tank a 25 without wiping cause of GPU/CPU lag, I know the specs say my rig should pwn, but if any of you KNOW let me know please

To the OP: try the video drivers available at Laptopvideo2go. These are desktop drivers you have to mod (very easy to do, just over-copy one file), but I have found them to be much faster than nVidia's laptop drivers which are (last I looked) still beta. -
you raiders ;p...gogo pvp! Gladiator Wodgy/Dragonblight/Eu-Blackout....any1 else there?
-
Andorhal US Horde here, and yea I love a good PvP too, <Insanity> tag is normally a death warrant for Alliance on my server lol

Guys, I play on a G50V through HDMI to my 47 inch LCD TV and get 60 fps. I run the latest DOX Nvidia drivers and I do is just turn down the shadows to get more fps! It's a newer feature in WoW that just kills machines.
How do I max G50vt-x1 for World of Warcraft?
