If I threw away the original package or perhaps bought my laptop in Taiwan instead of the US, how should I package the laptop in the situation where I need to RMA the laptop?

Using bubble wrap and put into a box, then write "FRAGILE" on the box!

Go to a UPS Store or the equivalent in your area and they have all shapes and sizes of boxes and plenty of bubble wrap. all of it shouldn't cost more than 10-20 bucks (depending on how much protection you want to get)

Yep. Afterwards when they send you the laptop back keep the box they send it in, you might need it in the future.

An important thing is to keep the notebook from rocking inside the box, so fixate it properly.

Fedex have the slickest laptop RMA box (It's about $10)...It holds the laptop in suspension in the middle of the box & has a rubber type coating on the parts that touch the laptop so it won't scratch .....Also you HAVE to use it if you use fedex as the carrier otherwise they won't honor their insurance policy.

    Nice.

This is totally off-topic, but speaking of packaging... I got my iPod nano yesterday...

It was in a huge 12x12x12 box. When I opened it, the actual box of the iPod was oh...about 1x2x3, if not less (you know how tiny the ipod nano is)....and there was no bubble wrap or any kind of packaging at all! ...

    Luckily it still works...
