    Hey guys,

My old notebook, Asus F8sn crashed and I already backed up all the files with Puppy Linux to an external hard drive. I now want to re-install Windows Vista, and start off with a clean slate to remedy any problem that caused the crash.

My question is, how do I go about doing this? Which particular disks that Asus provided do I need to run, and in what particular order? Do I need to re-install all the Asus drivers and utilities again? Asus did not provide a Windows installation disc, so which disk contains the Windows Vista installation? I burned a Windows Recovery Disc (32bit), but I'm not sure if that re-installs Windows Vista (as I think it only repairs)...

Any replies and suggestions would be appreciated...

The recovery disc reinstalls Vista, and there should be a recovery partition that you can boot to which does the same thing.

These installs revert your computer back to factory settings. To get a completely clean install, you need to obtain a Vista disc.

You can either use the recovery disk or you can restore using the hidden partition. Using either method gets your PC back to the state where it was when you bought it.
I think in case you do recovery using the recovery disk at the end of the process it will ask you to insert driver disk and it will install all the drivers for your.

If you really want to do a clean install than you will need a Vista disc.

It is possible to back up your OEM Vista license for your current installation and than restore it after you have installed a fresh copy of Vista.
If you are looking for more details than go to this website and there you will find a lengthy guide that will help you to do a clean install of Vista on your Laptop: :)

You do the hidden partition by pressing F9 during the boot up process.

You should see a startup option asking you which operating system to start, the option should be Windows Setup [EMS Enabled], press enter while it is highlighted.

Once you have the Asus Recovery Wizard, click on Next and choose any of the last two options.

option 2: Deletes the second partition so you have one big HDD ( this does not wipe the hidden partition, only the data on the C and D drives, then re-installs the original factory image. )

option 3: It retains original factory settings of 2 partitions and does everything else like option 2.

Option 1 is not the best choice since it is recommend only if you used a third party HDD utility to wipe your C and D.

If you wish to use your recovery DVD, use the Asus Recovery DVD 1/2 then the Drivers and Utility disc. In some regions it requires the second recovery DVD, most cases no.

Please feel free to PM me if you run into any issues while doing the recovery.

    Thank you.

If you have accidentally removed the recovery partition, is there a way of getting it back?

Hey, yall. Does anyone know how to choose which Asus Utilities (and other apps like Nero, Norton, etc.) while recovering from the Recovery CD on an Asus M50Sa Notebook? I believe I have done this before, but have failed in recent attempts.

I'd like to re-install Windows Vista Home Premium without Norton, Nero and a bunch of the Asus Utilities I don't use.

I would like to remove the partitions. Is there a simple way to do this and not loose all the stuff I've put on the HD's without using the recovery disk and restoring to factory settings?

If one of your partitions contains data, you could move it over to the other partition (assuming that's where your OS lies) - then use disk management software.

I think you could even use the Disk Management Utility in Windows to shrink and/or remove the unused partition, then allocate all the freed up space to your OS partition.

    Is this what you mean?

During the recovery you can force shutdown and reboot your computer at the point it is requesting the Driver CD. Upon the Next reboot, it will resemble a typical Windows installation procedure - once you have reached the desktop, insert you Driver CD and run the installation utility. This will allow you to choose and pick which driver, utility and application you want installed.

The built in Windows Vista disk management utility allows you to re-size and merge partition, please ensure that the partition to merged or re-sized does not have information that is not backed up as the process will delete existing files.
