I checked the manual which tells you were it is but doesnt say exactly how to open up the compartment. I unscrewed the screw directly above and to the right as well as few others in the vicinity but still couldnt get it open. Any ideas?

It's most likely held down by some clips, thus you have to apply some pressure to remove it. All laptops are like this, so when you take off the screws there's still something holding the panel on.

The manual should clearly indicate which screws have to be removed. Also if there are fancy ways of removing a panel there might be an arrow indicating the direction you have to pull.

Remove the five screws holding the large panle above the memory compartment panel and remove the large panel.
then you can remove the memory compartment panel
