I want to put in 2gb of RAM in my z70va (because I want to take full advantage of the notebook), and was wondering what should I expect in terms of performance? I'm running 512mb RAM on my P3 733 rig, and I've never been blessed with the opportunity of working with a high performance pc. Any thoughts of what I can look forward to? Thank you.

512-> 1gb of ram, major difference

1gb -> 2gb of ram, neglible unless doing very ram intensive stuff(encoding, etc.)

So you're saying that the 200 dollar upgrade isn't worth it?

Well, if you have the cash, sure, but 1gb is enough for most cases.

Nope. 1GB is more than you need for now. That is, until Vesta comes out and take up more of our system ram :-(.

If the work you do on your notebook calls for 2GB of RAM (which I doubt...) then do it.
Otherwise, if you already have 1GB of RAM, save your money and spend a night out with your significant other :D

I thought most new games would run a lot smoother with 2gb of RAM, but if y'all are saying it is not necessary, then I'd gladly save the cash.

MOst new game would run a lot smoother with 2GB of ram?? You can install a whole game on 2GB of ram :p, which is why it's too much and not worth it for the moment.

If anything the GPU is the bottleneck for the smoothness of the game.

A faster HD will improve loading times, a faster CPU will increase raw performance, a GPU is for faster video performance. RAM,well, I guess its a small bit of everything mentioned above...

    I think.

2 gigs is nice when you want to run many things in the background at once. I can play games or do encoding and have like 50 processes running with no slow down. I think it is alot more justified to buy the $100 extra gig instead of spend $350+ on a 7200rpm drive for maybe 15% more preformance.

I'll chime in here... I"ve got a W3V... and I'm also an avid BF2 and HL2 player, and I found that both games ran considerably smoother after loading the system up with 2 gigs. I don't regret my purchase at all. :)

Vista actually has a memory footprint of 700-800mb.

you don't need much memory, 1GB should be enough. If you would like to see how much different, use a 3Dmarks to compare the scores between 1GB and 2GB memory.

You can see the difference from our benchmark table, check the tests on Z70Va

Other than how long it takes to count Pi to 2million digits, what do the other benchmarks mean?

Benchmarks do very little to see differance in amount of memory. It is only seen when multitasking or using a program that use a lot of memory.. Just comparing benchmarks that are ment to test video or cpu preformance is not the way to test the amount of memory you have because that is not what they are created for. 2GB could be could helpful if you ever want to do video encoding, compression/decompression or just like running many things at once.

I recently went from 1GB to 2GB RAM on my Acer 8104 and I'm VERY happy with it. This puppy opens windows like a PC should now. It is PERCEPTIBLY much faster for general computing.

I see 1 gig as the absolute minimum these days. i have 3 of my machines with 2 gigs memory and it think its well worth it more so than even a cpu thats faster.

I have a gig of dual-channel DDR2-533. I've been running out lately - I noticed it when I was playing Doom 3 at Ultra Quality...

Also, I don't like having to shut down my background applications when I go to play a game - I just find it annoying that I feel limited! I'll be stepping up to 2GB soon.

I'd recommend getting a single 1GB stick now if you're buying a new notebook, then add another later on...

I have 2GB of RAM in my desktop. I don't think I've EVER had an application swap to the pagefile. Not even when using Photoshop CS2 on like 5 5MP images while running MATLAB, a bunch of Firefox windows, and watching TV.

I ran MATLAB and Doom 3 at the same time once and it didn't even swap. I've encoded DVD/MPEG2 to DiVX while playing Doom 3, and thanks to the A64-X2 under the hood, I didn't see any difference from normal gaming.

It's nice, but I would only do it on a laptop if it was my primary machine, and even then it might not be as helpful with a single core processor. I pretty much decided that with 2 CPUs, I needed 2x the RAM if I really wanted to be able to perform two intensive tasks at once.

Are we deciding on 1GB or 2GB or bragging about our system?

It appears to me that those with 2GB of RAM are sharing their experience of increased performance and computing satisfaction. I don't see any bragging. Those with 1GB are stating correctly that it's "sufficient" to get by on. You from the National Morality and Ethics Board or something?

Haha... one of the funnier comments I've read today.

I believe 2GB is really quite unnecessary... definitely not NEEDED, but nice to have.
Heck, 1 GB isn't even "needed"... but it's slowly becoming standard. If surfing and other office-type work is being done, I don't think any more than 1GB is needed at all... the money could be better spent.
