I'm just wondering how often they have promotions like mail in rebates or free stuff with notebook purchases since they have the $50-$200 dollar off promotion now on many Asus laptops I want to know if by July they would have something similar for their newer systems like the G2SG-A1.

    Thanks.

Asus usually offer promotions when they have a new line or refresh of laptops. The promotions will be offered to the older versions.

So do you think they'll have any promotion on the G2SG-a1 by July?

probably, since Intel's Montevina chipset and presumably Nvidia's 9600M GT graphics cards should be out by then.

I doubt it since the G2SG-a1 just came out. It'll probably be another 8 months or so before they start offering a promotion on that model (this is just a speculation, of course)

Keep in mind that there will be a delay when the new chipset/GPUs come out and when Asus actually implements these new hardware into their laptops.

Djembe is correct, however, in that whenever Asus makes a Montevina refresh of the G2 then it's possible that a rebate may go into effect and mid-Summer (rather than May or June right after launch) is a viable timeline for this to potentially happen.

However, for the OP the following is important -- Asus typically only puts rebates on models that don't sell well and have a substantial amount of leftover stock in the retail channel when they have a new or updated model they want to bring in. Just because a new model comes out doesn't mean that a rebate is imminent, it totally depends on what's still around at that point; Asus uses rebates as another form of clearance sale, nothing more.

The question is whether or not they will clear out the G2SG-A1 by July. I'm stuck now between a rock and a hard place because I would like to have the performance of the G2SG-A1 but the G2S-B2 is on sale now and its about 500 dollars less with mail in rebate.

There is a 25% performance increase with the G2SG-A1 as well as a 25% price increase.

Ok I just talked to Asus HQ, this guy Masaro in the Rebates/promo department. 2 points to add:

    1. He said there probably won't be a rebate on the G2SG by July-August but he said most likely there would be a price drop by then.

    2. He said that he hasn't used either system so he can't really comment on performance but going by the specs he thinks a 25% boost in the G2SG over G2S-B2 is a little high, he thinks its probably closer to 10-15%.

Overall he recommended that if I don't need the system now that I wait and buy the G2SG.

    Anyone care to comment?

As above -- the -B2 is in rebate now because there Asus NA has too much -B2 stock in the retail channel which didn't sell that they're trying to move out so the SG-A1 becomes the primary product in the market.

The SG-A1 will only get a rebate if Asus NA has leftover product that has to be sold when the Montevina refresh comes out; whether that scenario on -A1 sales figures comes to pass, where Asus would then offer a rebate on the -A1, is anyone's guess.

While giving respect to the guy at Asus, historically over the past couple of years Asus NA doesn't tend to alter the pricing on their notebook models, unless you count the rebate as a price drop. They simply upgrade the internal components (usually cpu, HDD or RAM) in the refreshed model and keep the price the same. Otherwise, his advice is sound -- buy when you need it.

Clearsky but if I 'buy when I need it' and I'm not getting a good deal (ie. this 150 dollar rebate) I kind of lose in the end no? Isn't it better to buy when you have a significant price drop even if it is a few months before your time?

The general rule for buying a laptop is, "if you need it now, but it now". Any type of electronics will depreciate the day it enters the market. If you are not in dire need of a laptop, you should wait until there's a promotion.
