Hi, I'm considering buying an ASUS G1s, and I need everyone's help, PLEASE. I've never had an ASUS before, and I'm a bit skiddish( worried..) on this.

So, I would like people's opinions.

1.) How long will this laptop last?
2.) Is it worth the value?
3.) Excellent specs on the laptop?
    4.) Frequent Blue Screens?
    5.) Overall look/style.

Also, I would like to have feedback on all the CONS and PROS on the laptop.

Do not be afraid to post anything BAD about it, because I need honest opinions on this investments.

Pros- If possible, please list and be detailed.

Cons- Same, If possible, please list and be detailed and honest.

There is nothing to be worried about...this laptop is very popular and just by looking at the many, many, many of threads in this forum you should be able to see that people are very pleased with them.

    1) Just like any other laptop, the technology will run its course eventually, and it's very hard to see into the future when it comes to technology...but i'd say you could comfortably run pretty much any game for the next 2 years. the laptop itself when it comes to it's "life" will last much longer than that, pretty much as long as you need it to assuming you take care of it...

    2) that's up to you. if you want to cough up the dough for a gaming machine, then sure, it's worth the value. if you're going to be using MS word primarily, then no, it's not. it is very well priced, only the c90 beats it in terms of value.

    3) ??? I mean, pretty much the best you can get without spending over 2.5k.

    4) if you get a blue screen on a g1, you probably screwed something up on your own. or you dropped it or something. of course there's also the risk of a hardware defection....but that is not g1s-specific and can happen to any notebook...easily replaceable by whoeever you bought the notebook from

    5) if you like the looks, you like the looks. it's pretty gamer-esque, as you can tell by looking so make sure you want that...

pros-its powerful. good battery life considering its a gaming notebook
cons-not as much processor power as a c90, and a little bit more expensive. not upgradeable like a c90, then again we have yet to find out just how upgradeable they will be anyways... also, everybody has one :)

I recently purchased my laptop from Gentech. I had a slight problem but it is being fixed.

So far I love it. It was the best priced computer for what I was looking for. (A decent gaming computer that wasnt 17'' and one that I'd be able to take to college.)

As I mentioned I had one problem with a Blue Screen but it was due to a faulty piece of RAM.

The overall look of the laptop is very nice. I know some have complained about it but I think it looks quite impressive. The top is jet black and quite shiny. (Not the best description.) Obviously it does have the WASD keys in green which are sort of unnecessary.

    Pros:
    Reasonably affordable gaming laptop.
    Easy to use.
Bright screen (I updated the BIOS, if anyone complains it is probably because they havent done this yet.)
    The keyboard feels nice.

    Cons:
This thing gets VERY hot. I have a cooling pad so its not a huge deal but the first time I had it on my lap I was quite surprised.

*You may get some complaints about the speakers. I don't think they are as terrible as others have said. I am coming off an old Gateway desktop with BOSE speakers and can obviously notice a difference. However, the speakers are better than a lot of other laptops I've heard.

    I love mine.

    Pros:
    Good build quality.
Control key in the right spot. :)
    Great wireless speed.
    Fast graphics.
When I select battery saver mode (for wireless internet browsing), I get about 2:30 of battery.
Touchpad feels nice (with vertical scroll build in).
I think the speakers sound quite good.

    Cons:
The black finish picks up fingerprints. (doesn't bother me, but I thought I should put something in the Con section so it doesn't get lonely.)

I don't regret it at all.

    1. as far as gaming is concerned, i would approximate the g1s to last a minimum of two years, possibly more depending on how taxing future dx10 games will be. as for the durability and longevity of the system itself, with proper care, i can certainly see this notebook lasting longer than the average lifespan of the average notebook (5-6 years).

    2. i can safely say if you're looking for a good gaming notebook, it is well worth the $2000. we would hard pressed to find a 15 inch notebook with the quality of hardware in the g1s in anything else out there on the market. compal makes some decent, comparable ones too, but i don't see them being as powerful or durable as the g1s.

    3. AMAZING specs on this laptop; from the processor to the dx10 graphics card to the stock 2 gbs of ram, this notebook screams quality. the only thing i suggest changing is the 5400 rpm hard drive, which might be a bit slower than you're hoping. most resellers offer the seagate 7200 rpm 160 gb hdd, which is what i got. if you really must, you can also upgrade to 3 gbs or ram, though i personally think it's overkill.

    4. no blue screens thus far (only had it a day), but i don't see them occurring other than from negligence on my part or a simple error.

    5. the g1s has a wannabe gamer look to it, but to be honest, i really can't tell. when i explained its looks to my girlfriend, she rolled her eyes and called it a "nerd machine." but when she saw it, she said it looked pretty simple and not gaudy at all. if you don't like the flashing leds on the sides, you can simply turn them off; the gamer eye however cannot be turned off and is a bit too much. however, i love it personally.

PROS: amazing hardware, really fast, can play all modern games on the highest of settings, first mobile dx10 graphics card so no driver problems with vista, cuts through vista aero like cake, looks slick, portable size for what i think is a desktop replacement notebook, not too much bloatware, (most importantly) feels like it's worth the cost

CONS: the ONLY cons i can possibly think of are the bunching up of four usb ports in the back of the notebook and the inclusion of bloatware (which is also a pro because it's not as much as say a dell or hp).

OTHER: people often complain about the sound quality of the speakers or the graininess of the screen, but these are both incredibly minor things. to be honest, i have only used the speakers once upon initial startup and i don't plan on it ever again just because it's so much easier to use external speakers while at home or a nice set of headphones while away. as for the graininess, i can tell what people are complaining about, but the screen looks so beautiful anyway i just can't deem it a worthy enough validation for not buying this thing.

BOTTOM LINE: if you want a notebook that is portable and can play all the modern games on the highest settings at an affordable price, the g1s is for you.

    1) Can't really say how long the laptop will last because it hasn't been out for that long. However, it feels solid. I'd imagine that, unless you are that unlucky 1 in some large number of buyers who gets a faulty machine, if you treat it well, it will last.

    2) I bought the thing, so for my own sake, I sure hope it is worth the cost. But so far I am extremely happy with it. I paid extra for a 3-year warranty. My philosophy is, if I am buying a $2000 machine that I am not putting together myself, I might as well pay the extra $100 to protect it an extra year.

    3) The specs are beautiful. Decent battery (when used on battery-saving mode), but has the power to game. For a 15.4 inch, I am very impressed with both its power and with its mobility.

    4) I've have not yet encountered a blue screen and I use mine constantly.

    5) I was never a fan of the green lights or the highlighted WASD keys. However, they aren't really that bad, and the rest of the design is beautiful (subjectively speaking, of course).

My pros/cons are pretty much the same as the previous posters. The only other "con" I would add is that the fan gets pretty loud on performance mode and can be distracting while gaming. My solution? I pump up my Logitech Z2300 speaker system to drown out the sound of the fan. Or I use headphones if I don't feel like annoying my roommates.

Really, I have nothing to add to what has been written. I just want to throw in my vote of support for this laptop. If you are content spending $1800 - $2300 (depending on how you configure RAM, HD, and warranty), and if you are looking for something that can both game and provide mobility, then I do not expect this laptop to disappoint. If you are looking for the power of a desktop replacement and do not care at all about battery, you might want to look elsewhere (i.e., wait and see what the C90 has to offer).

Ok, this sounds like an awesome laptop! Thanks a lot guys!

By the way, I read off other websites, and some people's posts on overheating issues, how bad is the over heating? Cause I'm going to take this future laptop of mine around a lot..and i'm putting it on my laptop quite frequently...(airports, school, etc)

It really is an amazing laptop, I plan on using it for atleast the next 3 years. It feels really sturdy. The bottom of the laptop does get kind of hot when running games. All of the heat comes pretty much from the upper right(hard drive) and the center. aka Quad I if the laptop was a coordinate plane. This also includes the right side of the keyboard.

If you're worried about heat on a desktop replacement just do yourself a favor and get a cooling pad now. It's going to be hot (while you're gaming).

I am quite pleased with my G1S.
1.) It will probably last me 2-3 yrs
2.) Great price for a gaming laptop
    3.) Very nice specs indeed
    4.) What Blue Screens? :)
5.) It doesn't look as polished as the dv9000t or thinkpads but it has that I'm-built-for-speed-not-looks feel to it

It probably runs hot but I use the Antec laptop cooler (works quite well and on sale at circuity city for $10 btw) so I can't really tell :D

the heat is no worse than any other desktop replacement notebook...if you don't like it, get a cooling pad, or don't buy a gaming laptop.

    it overheats...when it's working hard...aka when you're gaming...

The G1S isn't a DTR, it is a mainstream, in addition it doesn't overheat, but it does run warm. My computer runs from 85-100 degrees Celsius. THAT is overheating.

Cooling pads run from $10-$70 from what I've seen, from what I've heard they really are all the same... just # of fans. I have one with only two fans, don't know if it will be enough when mine gets year, and I can't wait for it to!

I'd probably look for a good name like antec or targus. Three fans if you can find them, two will prob be fine I think.

And its not like G1S's are frying left and right, heat is not an issue, and if it is a slight comfort one, cooling pad! Problem solved! :)

My G1s is doing fine with the heat. I bought a cooling pad just to be on the "cool" side and to take a load off of the computer itself.

It is vary cool when compared to other computers with its specs.

    Totally worth it.

    1) If you use it in your kitchen as you are making hamburgers
    2) Using it next to an outdoor grill
    3) Using it as you watch Desperate housewives
    lol :D

My point is do not worry about over heating man. Almost all laptops will have a slight increase in temps while gaming.

Asus make great and very solidly built laptops. This will be my second Asus as soon as it comes in. I typically give my laptops a 2 year lifespan before buying a new one and passing my old down. Ive owned 5 laptops, my first 4 in 2 years and my Asus for the last 3, I will probably never use another brand.

some questions for all the G1S users.

um.. I am having xp on G1s, all devices are installed and "working" (no yellow ? in device manager"
so i can safely say that the G1S cannot go into/out of standby properly is a well-known issue? also that the cpu does not go have speedstep when on ac is also a known issue?

how about the problem of asus's wireless console 2 inability to disable the wireless (Fn+F2)? i can enable & disable the bluetooth but not the wireless. I am using the G1 version of the wireless console.

i also noticed one more problem, the top right hand usb port (posterior view) does not seem to power down after shutting down windows. it only turns off after i switch off the adapter. I had my cooler plugged into that port and it was spinning non-stop even after i shutdown. I tried the usb mouse on that particular port and the red led was on for a while before it switched off itself. all other ports are ok with the cooler except that particular one. anybody have tt problem too?

what does it mean by having a "lemon"?

i have one more concern regarding temperatures. My G1S runs at

    no loads loads
    HDD - 51 oC 54 oC
    GPU - 69 oC 89 oC
    CPU - 61 oC 83 oC

Is this normal? it seems awfully hot. no loads means just surfing the net and nothing else and loads means playing games. And i am already using a notebook cooler. And the vent at the back is not blocked.

    thanks!!

On the "overheating" issue...as someone said, it doesn't overheat, but it does get hot in full performance game mode.
I am sitting in a hotel lobby right now, I have the computer on battery saver mode, and it gets only slightly warm on my legs (not uncomfortable at all, kind of like a towel that came out of the dryer a minute ago).

I have played games in full performance mode with it on my lap, and it does get quite warm. It's not so much the bottom of the laptop (though the bottom does get pretty warm), but the fan on the back left blows some pretty hot air out. If it's angled just right (like the computer is on your lap when you're in bed, or something), the air can blow on your leg. That's not very tolerable.

I hope this clears up some questions.

    PS - I love my G1S.

Like a lot of the posts here, I wouldn't worry too much about the heat. If you do decide to go with a cooling pad, you don't need to go overboard and get the super deluxe max cooling model. I went for the cheapo antec ($10) which I originally bought for my dv9000t and I now use it with the G1S and it works quite well.

by any chance any1 knows wad the temp1 sensor in speedfan measures?
my temp1 reading is quite high now at 81 degrees even though my other readings are fine. I can't seem to figure what it measures.
