I left my laptop on while it was still in the bag for at least an hour. Not intentionally of course. I must have accidently hit the little switch that turns on the cd/dvd drive while I was putting it in the bag. I took it out when I got home and that's when I noticed that it was still on. Man was it hot... as in burning hot. It was only an hour, but did I do permanent damage? Could anything have melted inside?

Well it would be easier to help you if you could tell us what the temperature of certain parts like the cpu and hard drive was.

I would imagine that your notebook would have hardware shutdown before something started really burning. Does it still work? Is it making any new noises or behaving any differently?

I don't think he would know since he probably shut it off ASAP.

As for temps, about 100 degrees is where the CPU will auto shut itself off, anything higher would be assumed to create damages.

I highly doubt your notebook is ruined.

Agreed. Laptops have built-in safety precautions that kick in after a certain temperature is reached.

Just make sure next to to put your system in standby or hibernate if you're moving around, and don't want to boot-up when you take it out to use it. In these modes the processor and everything will be off, and only the RAM will be storing critical information that's needed when you log back on again.

Had the same thing happen to me while carrying around my W3V. I really don't know how it reactivated, but it was on and in my backpack, and it was burning hot when I took it out... and still functioning fine. The battery was almost dead by that time though; it must've been on for quite a long while.

I was definitely scared it would be damaged, but in this case, nothing happened to it at all.

I've been wondering what the normal 100% load temperatures are myself, and what is safe? Well, after some searching I found this page throuh Tomzhardware:

    http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL9SL#

Intels specs are for 100C maximum. My V1 has been running at 73 or so on C&C3 gaming. Seems kinda hot but whatever I guess I'm OK.... the summer heat waves will tell the story further......

had mine crash once because of hard drive temp, no problem with it... the error check went crazy and caused the overheating in the first place

Your laptop would have shut itself off if it majorly overheated.

Anyways set your laptop to Standby when the lid is closed and you wont have to worry anymore. :)

I didn't get a chance to check the temp... as soon as I noticed it was on I turned it off immediately. My laptop was actually off when I set it in the bag. Along the way I somehow hit the slider/switch underneath the laptop that turns on the cd/dvd (without having the laptop completely on). Well, I opened the laptop as best I could and it doesn't appear that anything was fried. Thanks for the help!
