    I have the Asus N71jq-x1.

    CPU Type Intel Core i7
    CPU Speed 720QM(1.60GHz)
CPU Support 6 MB L3 Cache

Graphics Card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
    Video Memory 1GB DDR3 VRAM

Say like I'm surfing , watching a video, and doing some video editing

    Speedfan said it was 60c

So I bought this Evercool fit cooler.

Now it stays at 50-51c doing the above task with this cooler installed.

FWIW, my g51vx went to 95 under load.

I think your headline question is too vague - too hot is relative to your computer type. And for your specified computer, that's fine.

Thermal specifications are usually around 100C, but it varies from component to component.

When you start playing and you begin to smell bacon, even when you are not cooking bacon; then you know things are getting too hot.

According to recent news, Sony decided hot was too hot when it starting melting the cases on their machines, causing them to warp.

the i720 shutdown [if memory serves] 105c

I used to freak out about temps. . then I owned a mac ;) now I only start to worry if something hits triple digits. HOWEVER, if you're overly worried you can always try a cooling pad, a fan across the keyboard, pack it in dry ice, etc :D
