I am looking at both the G50Vt-X5 And the X83Vm-X2 as possible replacements to a desktop...I have never had an ASUS problem in the past (besides realllllly slow driver updates on GPU's) But lately i am hearing not quite so pleasent things about ASUS reliability? Anyone care to reinstill my faith?

Me too. I have been a loyal customer of ASUS for a long time. I bought their mainboard, graphic card, optical drive and so much but laptop. I have a G50Vt-X3 awaiting for transport to me. But their's a lot of recent complaint about ASUS quality. I'm so worry.

think about it. The only reason (most) people come on this forum is to solve a problem. If you are completely satisfied without your laptop, you wouldnt be posting here.
Also, ive been using my G50v for 8 months and so far its running great.
Only issue ive had is a damaged line out port >.> But i plan to send in my laptop to get it repaired this summer -
I've had a v1s-b1 running 24/7 since October 2007, apart from my optic drive failing, it hasn't missed a beat.

Yea, firstly this is a forum mainly for support, so you're going to see a disproportionate amount of problem threads. Secondly, a select few ASUS models such as the G1S have inflated the total reliability issues by a fair bit.
The G50 and G71 products seem to have pretty decent reliability. -
Here's a thought, from someone who has actually had problems, and is pretty mad at Asus right now.
They're not so bad.
Surprised? I did have a big issue with mine, but i really think that my situation was a perfect storm involving Best Buy employees, a shorter-than-normal warranty, a line of computers (the G2S) with heat and graphics problems, and a few other issues.
I've always said - when the computer ran, it was a monster, and I enjoyed it very much. I liked the build, design, look, feel, and capabilities - it just had the one flaw, shared by many notebooks in that line, from what I read.
My only real complaint with Asus as a company is not getting word out to me, as an owner of a product which apparently had some known issues - the first I learned about these issues, it was too late to help me.
So, honestly? I can't tell you not to go Asus, and I'm angry at them. Don't buy a G1S or G2S, and do your research, and I think you'll probably have a good experience. Stay on top of your computer - keep an eye on it, and don't be afraid to send it in for repair if you note trouble.
Heck, even customer service really wasn't bad - I was angry as hell about the situation, but I did have the feeling that they were at least trying to help and trying to make things right, they just couldn't.
But other than that, even as a guy who really isn't happy with them personally, I can't say that ALL Asus is bad. So, as the poster above me said, realize that all computer manufacturers are going to have the occasional horror story about bad units, and that we all gather here on the internet to tell our sad stories (but very few come in to tell good ones) so the data gets a little skewed. Do research from reputable sources, ask around (as you are doing!) and you should be able to avoid major pitfalls with anyone, Asus included.

Asus is no different then dell or hp. The only difference is that they only have a fremond and indiana service center, all their tech support is in america and they actually make and design their own products where dell and hp really do not. Asus can use major improvement. That is obvious because every brand can. Other then that their product is reliable and solid for the most part just as you should expect from a company that produces millions of laptops per year.

If you are in the UK, Asus are known to be very bad. Most other areas are probably ok.

I purchased a Asus G50vt-B1 last week, and the build quality is very good compared to the HP's I've owned in the past. The case doesn't creak or sound like it's going to break when you pick it up. The keyboard has a good feel to it, although the touchpad buttons are very stiff. I use a mouse with mine, so the touchpad issue is not a real problem for me.
For the money, I think Asus makes a very good quality notebook PC. -
For a (highly) detailed account of the ASUS problems, see the Info Booth, a "Survey on ASUS problems with notebooks and support" -- which are two different things, mind you!
Since writing that piece, the quality of ASUS has stayed roughly constant. What I can say is that, recently, most if not all ASUS notebooks can be filed under "bang for the buck, good-specced consumer notebooks". That does not necessarily come with disadvantages, but it can come sometimes.
Many recently popular ASUS notebooks are from series that have recently been introduced, so they fall under the "not known yet" category. N-series fall here, the X8 variants as well. When buying such a new ASUS model (one that hasn't been around in various incarnations for a long time so that we know its quirks) you're sort of playing the lottery:
* There are chances that it'll be a very good model, with good build quality and virtually free of problems (F8 variants, now pretty much extinct).
* There are good chances that it'll be a reasonable model, with good build quality and with some problems -- but problems that are more annoyances rather than show stoppers -- G50, M50, U6.
* However there are also chances it'll be a bad model with severe issues (G1S with overheating and dying GPUs -- ASUS' fault for overheating, nVidia's fault for dying GPUs; F3 with their cracking cases).
I'm more or less in the same boat as the OP, since I'm considering the F6, and I am trying to decide whether I want to play an (expensive!) lottery or not.
In any case do your research about the particular model you care about in advance, know what to problems to expect, take into account how new it is (i.e. if there may be longer-term problems that people didn't bump into yet), and make an informed decision.
No general statement can be made that "ASUS quality is bad" or "ASUS quality is good" I'm afraid (whereas the latter used to be true some years ago...) It all depends on the model, and sometimes we don't know yet. -
they have pretty good hardware but im not impressed with their actual build quality. The case on my N80 seems kind of thin and cheap. its a great value for the money but I just cant say its build quality is good.

I am definitely buying from ASUS again -

MY screen stopped working!, Battery doesnt charge! HP's warranty sucks! I will never buy a Dell AGAIN!!....
All of those were made up, but you should see where im getting at. I really dont see too many complaints in these forums about Asus mainly threads about what Asus they should buy or Asking about a particular model. My point is dont hesitate if you like it buy it. Plus they have an amazing warranty. Good luck G
How is ASUS's Reliability as of late? I'm rather concerned with the influx of negativity i am hearing.
