Is it better then say, a Dell? And if so, by how much?

My dad has a dell but its a real POS. The screen is all wobbly and the keypad flexes a whole lot. Sometimes after he goes to bed I like to take it and dunk it in the toilet a few times. I want it to die its the [lamest] laptop of all time. Its super ugly too. Its blue and grey and has scratches all over it from the side of the toilet. You cant even play a game on it coz it doesnt even have a video card.

    Ok...

It's better than dell, but depends on which model you go for.

Dell latitudes aren't bad, and the inspirons are getting better--much better than they used to be.

Some asus' are better than others.

Depends which model, for all brands its the same way.

For Dell, their Inspiron line is their budget consumer line, their business line is the Lattiude line, which is alot better in quality.

For ASUS, its hard to tell, but the easiest way is obviously the price. You get what you pay for.

I own Asus Z71V for about a year now and the lid still feels tight everytime I close it. So far nothing is loose yet. Very happy with the built quality.

When comparing the E6400 to the Z96j, you can get both close to the same price, however with Dell you may not like certain components you get, like the quality of the hard drive and such.

If you buy a Z96j, you have the choice of any hard drive brand, ram brand plus is some cases your reseller may be faster in terms of service and support.

You can compare many reviews of the Z96j to the E6400 with similar specs, and compare quality and performance and such.

If you feel that getting quality components and service is worth more, then get the Z96j based on what u read in the reviews.

The Dell E6400 is pretty good in itself, especially since you can bump up the specs and then use a coupon and get a higher speced laptop for cheap.

    The choice is yours.

What is wrong with you? You don't like your dad's laptop, ok. But, you're going behind his back and dunking it in the toilet while he's asleep? You whine about the scratches, but you're the one that made them yourself. I hope my son doesn't do that with my belongings.

How much do you really know about laptops? Obviously, the build quality back in the day is worse than nowadays. And, OF COURSE the specifications are worse. Are you going to buy a BRAND new laptop, compare it to a very old one, and become shocked that there is a diference? You also whine that you don't appreciate the aesthetics? It is an old laptop, and not all designs age that well. I don't think there's something wrong withit just because some kid can't appreciate how it looks. How many laptops back in the day had dedicated graphics card that can play recent games anyway.. especially inexpensive basic consumer laptops? Yes, Asus quality is better than Dell quality.

You just seem like some kid that isn't that informed about technology and just wants his dad to get him a brand new laptop so he can play games on it.

Why are all of you taking him seriously? I know Dell's quality wasn't that great back in the day, but all laptops were worse back then. My 5 year old IBM is wobblier and squishier than brand new Toshibas and Acers, and those brands aren't even considered to be "quality."

Asus Ensemble line is leagues better than Dell in terms of build quality and finish. This is most evident in their higher end models of course.

Dell is a major volume/price point player so that is to be expected.

In my experience, it's no contest between the two.

I don't think that was a very good review. Things like the "I was forced to install my own OS..." just don't seem to be fair wording. He made a decision to buy a barebones laptop, no one 'forced' him.

I can only speak for the V6 series, which is part of the ASUS "ensemble" lineup. The build quality of my machine is nothing short of spectacular, and it is easily the best feature of the notebook (in my opinion).

That said, I know folks with Dell Lattitudes that have been banging on them heavily for years and they are very happy with them. I personally have had bad experiences with Inspirons in the past (say 5-6 years ago) and so would definitely buy a Lattitude over an Inspiron... however it does seem that the Inspirons are a lot better than they used to be in terms of build (I work with some folks that have a fleet of them and they seem very solid).

The ASUS ensembles are definitely higher build quality, in my opinion. Whether that makes them better machines overall, or better purchases overall, is a much more complicated question and very difficult to answer.

The F3Jv is another option with similar specs, but probably won't be available for a while yet.

    Cheers.

So is the question whether an Asus will withstand repeated toilet dunkings better than a Dell? Well I guess it depends if you go with the "built on" line or an "Ensemble"... :D ;)
