I never owned a laptop before all my computers are desktops but now that I'm leaving for college I'm in market for a laptop so I was wondering how long do laptops in general last? Asus laptops in particular. When is the asus F3SV series coming out?

It depends on what your needs are. If you're a gamer, maybe 2-3 years. If you just type papers and surf the net, 4+ years.

Hard to say about lifelines, as the main unknown variable is the end user. Their usage tendencies, styles, etc. will greatly effect the life time of the notebook.

Lets say 4 hours of web surfing/gaming/multimedia/writing notes a day. When is the asus F3SV series coming out?

Well, the notebook isn't going to instantly die. Various parts will get worn down first. sp00n, what are you basing your estimates on? I've noticed that for my desktops, the Hard drive is usually the first thing to go. However, by the time a HD dies, its usually time to upgrade it anyway.

It differs depending on usage, but there is no real 'Health Point Bar' on the notebook(or above it rather) that declines over time :p

In my case, my V6 has been in use for almost 2 years, 18 months. It's been in use everyday for at least 6-10 hours, and probably was completely off for more then 2 hours, about 20-30 times in total.

As of now, it's been on for about 5 weeks, not counting hibernation when I move it around.

I game, I type up reports, essays, I use GIS software on it, it's with me all the time. It hasn't shown signs of slowing down(besides the obvious technological advances), so it's been good to me :)

Just make sure bi-weekly maintenance is done, cleaning out vents, cleaning the insides, keyboards, etc.

huh bi-weekly maintenance? I never cleaned my desktops before and they lasted 4 years +++ does that mean you have to take apart the laptop? Whats the 1st thing to go when your laptop starts breaking down?

If you get one of their premier models (1500 dollars and up range) it will run until you want to buy a new one...but you will probably want to buy a new one in 3-4 years.

Well, nothing hard, a can of compressed air is pretyt much it. Open it up(a few screws and a plate at the back, use it to blow the dust out from vents and the fan. That's pretty much it, dust accumulation is a large factor in notebooks, as the size factor can easily clog a vent.

well, if u get a weak laptop it wont' last long. Just like in 2004, i got a Celeron then after that in 2006 I'll decide to go for Core Duo i can't stand the slowness of Celeron any longer :D.

It's just depends on ur usage and ur "Desire" to get newer more powerful laptops. If you're an easy going person, just get what's decent now to fulfill ur need and usages. That's it.

I used to have a Dell C2D with ATI x1400 then I don't like it because of some error with motherboard, I return and use the money to build my Asus. I'm happy with it now. It does the job and the specs is as i'm expected. The C2D processors will last pretty long which i hope for not changing any laptop for 3 years.

Heh, how long is relative depending on what you mean. ;P

Durability? Depends on the generation, as with each newer generation these things get more and more fragile and sensitive to problems. The main things that go on laptops is generally optical drive and HDD. Most of the newer units also have removable GPUs in the event the GPU dies (these things keep running hotter and hotter).

Servicable? ASUS eStore is pretty much the place to be looking for spare parts.

Current? Affects all laptops, there's always something new coming out every six or nine months.

A/F [comparatively] low class/budget build and design. Can get higher quality components in these, however.

W/G medium class (except for W2)

    V high class (includes W2)

So are you saying newer laptops won't last as long as older ones? I am getting an Asus G1S and I plan on having it last for a few years, now I'm concerned

    OK, to clarify.....
Will the G1 still be running and fully functional in a couple of years - Yes.

Will the G1 be able to keep up with whatever is current technology in 2010 - absolutely not. 'tis the nature of technology.

My 18-month old system can't hold a candle next to the current capabilities of either the Merom or newer SantaRosa systems, but it still gets the job done.

I just ordered a G1S and plan to use it for a few years as well. Just make sure you take care of it. Don't throw it around, clean it if it gets clogged, and don't let anyone use it who you don't trust.

I guess everyone forgot about the S6 and the U1. They are the ultraportable premium models. They also have the Sideshow, which is a W5 model, it is high class as well.

I agree for the most part with the breakdown by letter, but to add some that others commented on-

V series- top build quality, should be = to IBM
S and U series- Asus' ultraportables, high build quality
W series- generally high build quality, with some exceptions
    M series- average-high build quality
    G series- average build quality
A and F series- low-average build quality, Asus' budget lines

    also to be noted:
Z series (includes S96J)- Asus' barebones, varied build quality
C series- new upgradeable barebones, unknown build quality

    G series - Best value!

That is entirely an opinion. An arguably true opinion, but I understand that there is no true way to be "best value" unless a laptop had the capability to be all types at once. Please don't jump on me :p

Well, the VX2 has the capability to be all types at once and fill any role you want in the 15.4" range, including gaming almost as well as the G1 probably...but most people wouldn't consider it "best value" because of the unrealistic cost =p

    Then there's the V1... *sigh*
