Specifically I am talking about a z71v that I am thinking about getting..

But is there a "recommended" maximum time that you are to leave your laptop on?

will I be able to leave it on overnight or few days or weeks, months?! (downloading, etc.) or even idling while I'm away? but I'm afraid it might hurt the computer's insides (burning or something idono)

What about playing games for extended periods of time? (leaving a game on for 24 hours?) like guild wars, or half life 2 or any other modern games

Probably best to switch it off when you can, as for gaming for 24 hours, i wouldnt really recommend it. Keep in mind the lcd also has a lifetime as well as the battery. The battery ages faster if its hot and the hard drive doesnt like to be hot either so i'd probably recommend a cooler. I dont know how you're going to spend 24 hours playing a game anyways, and even if you can it's probably not the best idea to do so.

Ok theoretically if the lptop is built and tested pro[erly and you use it on a flat surface with the intake unobstructed you will be able to use it 24/7 without poweroff. Keep in mind that anything that moves, spinns, lights up or rotates has a limited life span. The lsee you use it the longer it will last. :)

If you have your system "on" but allow it to use it's powersaving features... like standby and so forth... your lcd will turn off... you could power down your hard drives after a set period as well. In that situation, it should be just fine to leave it on your desk like that all the time instead of powering it off and night and back up in the morning and you can leave your programs or games open and come back to them when ever.

This might be kinda silly...but is there anyway to assign a key on the keyboard to put the laptop to sleep like many Desktop systems have these days? I love that feature and It would make things really easy for laptop users wanting to leave the system on, but save many of the components from being damaged or over worked. Just curious?

When you say limited lifespan, what are we talking here...no matter what at least 3 years or not even that? With a little above average use, can I expect to get at least 3 years out of a W3V?

Well, if the keyboard is like my M6Ne, you could try the Fn+F1 key.. that puts the computer into sleep.

Well, the new systems have two keys:

    "FN" + "F1" = standby or "Z"

    "FN" + "F4" = hibernate or "Zz"

But you can set the system to go into standby when you close the lid..... or when you don't touch it for a set period of time. there are so many ways to customize this to your needs that it's hard to give one staight answer.
