I am thinking about getting one for occasional travel but mostly just to use around the house, like using it on my lap while watching tv or when im sitting up in bed.How hot does this thing get, can it be used comfortably sitting in your lap?
-
It gets hot! I wouldn't make a habit out of using it on your lap.
As far as weight, it is a little heavier than your conventional laptop so you will feel it when you do use it on your lap for a prolonged period of time. I suggest getting one of those small laptop tables/stands.
Carrying it around in the house isn't bad. I also travel with it and the backpack helps with that. I'm used to a 17" Inspiron 9300, so my opinion may be a little biased since I do appreciate this machine being a little lighter and smaller. -
It is a fairly big machine but it is also very light in my opinion. It would not be a hassle if you had a laptop table or stand.

Well it gets hot if you are gaming, but I'd suggest using it on a table/desk if you are doing that. If you are just surfing the web or doing work, it really doesn't heat up too much, especially on power saver mode since it downclocks the video card and processor. If you're just doing those tasks then its fine to use on your lap.
It's really not bad to carry around, even without a backpack. -
A large Atlas or something like that does make a very good notebook lap-table too, it's also better to put it on a flat service when you use it so the vent openings can not be blocked.

Probably depends on what your threshhold is; as 15" notebooks go, it is one of the bigger/heavier ones that I've seen (it has an overall bulk that you don't see on some sleaker 15" laptops, like the V1S, etc.).
I remember when checking it out at Best Buy, I was kind of surprised that the overall dimensions of it didn't seem that much smaller than the 17" Toshiba P105 sitting next to it.
I can't help thinking something like the V1S might be a better bet to look at (or maybe the upcoming Dell XPSM1530, which supposedly will be quite lightweight). -
The GPU gets to be ~100 degrees celsius, literally hot enough to fry eggs. Don't use this thing on your lap, especially if you're a guy. If you are a guy, I'm sure you know what I mean. I'm not making this up, it's scientifically proven.

The G1S is very large for a 15" and I wouldn't call it "very light", not by a long stretch....
So the answer is: not very mobile, unless you're used to carry 17"-ers around... -
I carry my G1S to college lecture classes and seminars. I also carry it to work, and have used it on airplanes. It works just fine for my purposes. On battery mode (P4Gear), the screen at 20%, and with the latest Vista updates, I get just under 3 hours of battery (a little less with wireless enabled and surfing the net). Also, on this mode, I don't find it too toasty to place on my lap for an hour and a half at a time. And really... 6.5 pounds isn't that terrible to carry around... it is just like carrying an extra textbook (only, in the case of the G1S, it is actually worth its cost).

I also get my G1S with me to starbucks and every where i go it's not too big to carry but my friend's G2S is much bigger.
