    Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask Asus users what is your opinion concerning the fan noise produced by your laptop. I have an A8Js (I'm quite happy with it) but since I bought I find the noise produced by the fan to be quite annoying. I've already sent the computer back to RMA twice due to this issue, and the Asus guys changed it twice (fantastic tech support, by the way).
i 've had previous experiences with other laptops brands (HP and Toshiba) and I found them to be less noisy.

Are you happy with the level of noise your laptop produces?

How does your Asus compare with other brands? I've compared my A8Js with an HP of a friend of mine, with the same T7200, 2gb and an ATI and I could hardly hear the computer working... Ok the laptop was a 17'' one, and from the business line, but even so I wasn't expecting such a difference.

Are the new Santa Rosa laptops less noisy (and do they run cooler), than the previous T7xxx/T5xxx generation? I'm under the impresseion that they are, but I'm not sure....

Should Asus work on solutions to reduce the level of noise produced by the fan? In my opinion they should...

    All the best,

    nickie

Depends on what I'm doing, somewhere between a really load fan and a jet engine, then again it can get a bit hot :p

I don't really have much experience with Asus notebooks besides the C90S, but I ad a Toshiba P105-9722/9337 and that was pretty noisy in terms of fans as well.

Santa Rosa should make them run cooler and not work as hard, maybe fixing the fan situation. Wait till Penryn, that will change it too :).

My Asus Z71V has a soft whirring sound when I'm in a quiet room. I can't hear it at all when I'm in class. The graphic card fan spins up when I'm playing games to a noticeable medium to high pitched whirring sound, but it's not annoying and doesn't detract from the game. The CPU fan is noticeable, but isn't usually running (undervolting for the win). The DVD drive is somewhat noisy when it spins up and when running. Overall, it tends to be one of the quietest notebooks in the classes I've taken.

Not really any noise for me, unless I really push the thing, but then you expect noise.

I find the W3V to be quite noisy, especially when I'm doing anything that requires a bit of CPU. I undervolt. Also, the laptop gets quite hot... my only two gripes!

My M6Ne is dead quiet - the fan barely ever comes on... and I barely hear the fan whenever it does.
However, the Z63a/W3a makes some fan noise.. it's noticeable in a quiet room, but it's not that annoying.

My V6j was pretty quite too. It was noticeable if it was the only source of noise, but in a class, it was fine.

By default my Asus has the fan running at 3200rpm, which is a lot. I use NHC to undervolt and to control the fan speed, since using the default settings the temps are around 38º/40º when using word, internet, and so on. With nhc I'm able to get the fan at a confortable 2200rpm where just a whirring can be heard (on a close room it's still noticeable). Temps run at around 45º/46º in this case.
I believe that the 3200 rpm are too high for this model. In your models, you probable have the fan running at a lower rpm, but Asus seems to have decided not to go that way with the A8js... It's a shame because a really love the laptop, and I don't like using hacks on it but that's the only way I can use it. As I said, my fan has been changed twice and the noise level is still the same, so it seems not to be a problem with the fan but with the model.

That might be attributable to the series too. I have a feeling that the W and V series get a little bit more attention to those details, if you know what I mean.

heh... Mine is like a engine on an Jet when gaming haha. But that's to be expected of the G1s.... After all its a GAMING machine. Also, when just using day to day applications, you can't even hear the fan

I also think that it could be due to the series, but I've been reading some thread regarding the U3 and W7 and see users also complaining about some noise of the fans... Althought I agree that the A series is more budget oriented (and I can feel it in the plastics...) I believe Asus should take care of this kind of details. Furthermore, given my temps @ default I believe the Asus guys screwed the thermal programming in the BIOS. I think that the most of the other models have their fans spinning at a lower rpm (it would be nice if anyone could confirm this...), but run slightly hotter than mine. I remember reading a user that had its W7 running at 50º@idle and around 70º@full. In my case, in default I have less than 40º@idle and around 60º/65º@full. If I decrease the rpm with NHC than I get 45@idle and 60@full (using undervolting for the full load, otherwise I would get the 65º). I know we are talking about different systems (the W7 is a 13.3'' and mine a 14''), but even so this is a big difference.

My fan kicks in whenver Windows is loaded, but it is barely audible. The fan noise is created by the notebook cooler.

My F3Ja is moderately noisy, as I run Folding@Home on it. It's undervolted and overclocked, so it runs somewhat cooler than stock. When it's idle, it's pretty quiet, when gaming it gets increasingly noisy.

heh.. sounds exactly like that for precisely like 2 seconds, and it stops. It's so weird. And the fact, that the optical drive bay is the weakest spot on the G1s...

ODDs are very loud upon spinup, that's true.

    Fan noise: nearly non-existent on the M6Ne;
audible in quiet surroundings on the V6J. When another source of noise is present like a desktop or just chatter from adjoining rooms, the sound cannot be heard.

    Overall very reasonable sound output.

The Eee PC is dead silent due to the SSD. If there is a fan in this thing, I can't hear it - even when lift it up to my ear.

Asus Eee and w7s are silent unless you put your ear up against the notebook while idle. C90S is a little bit louder and gets even louder during gaming or other CPU/GPU intensive tasks.

for the first time i heard my fan today (ive had the laptop since around July 1st) I dont know why it kicked in, i think that it might need a cleaning or something. But now i know i got a fan, that is just weird that this is the first time its really kicked in.

its been blowing slightly, but not like it did, ive noticed the temps are up a few degrees too so it looks like its time to clean it up

My W7S is very quiet. I've only just heard the fan spin up when it's doing something very processor-oriented (compiling, encrypting, etc) in a quiet room/office. For all other purposes like web/e-mail and text processing it's dead quiet.
