I have an Asus W2V and it doesn't burn every CD brand.
Maybe its possible to make a list witch brands couse trouble with the matsh!ta DVD burners.
It could save some money if you don't waist youre money on the wrong brand.

    Firts ones i encounter is:

    Imation
    Tevan

I had the best result on my old 845 using Taiyo Yuden discs. The error rate was still high at the end of the disc. Mash!tas are not very good drives.

I agree that the quality of burning on laptop drives is an area that is really lagging behind the desktop counterparts. Normally you should be able to find a list of supported media via a quick google. That said TY are good, as are any of the other top A rated media.

Yes... I agree. Optical drives on notebooks seem to be less than stellar most of the time...

Underpantman: Nice to see you posting :) We need to see more of you around here!

Don't know why more makers don't use NEC drives which are in my opinion a cut above the rest.

yup, i took my drive out too see what was wrong with it cos it kept making a grinding sound (and still does) when writing CD's.
It sounds normal when buring DVD, but for CD's it sounds like something is stuck in the gears and cogs.
It almost sounds like a REALLY REALLY noisy hard drive constantally seaking, but worse!! Not only that but in CD mode it also take around 3x longer than Nero originally says it should take to burn the disk.

its made by toshiba/samsung drive (TSST corporation)

Do you think I should have this checked?

    Justin can you help?

    @Insane

i also have more "problems" with CD's than with DVD's.
But DVD's i buy Philips and thats a good brand, with CD's a buy unknow brands.
I now only buy Philips and TDK and have no more problems.
Strange do that my Plextor eats every brand with no problems even Tevan and Imation.

It is unlikely that Philips makes your DVDs. You can use DVD Identifier to find out who actually makes them and look them up on DVD-RHelp.com.

interesting, I've been using Imation, TDK, and the in house brand that the company I work for makes.... (funny enough my companies ones do just fine ) but ALL CD's make the grinding noise. I'll have to record it and upload it somewhere for you to appreciate how bad it is.

yeah I get them for next to nothing at work too :D

I can write to Imations, I can write to any disk no matter what brand, thats not a problem, I've got the latest firmware for the DVD/RW drive but it still makes the same sound. It doesnt make the sound when writing to DVD's though.

have you tried flashing the firmware?

I'll try write something with my newer A6Vc, and see if that drive does the same thing. Its make by the same manufacturer but has lightscribe too.

Whoever said Matsu****a's drive aren't great is horribly mistaken. They manufactured drives for Sony and Panasonic just to mention two.

It's probably just that model OR you have not setup your software properly. You've got to install ASPI properly and have it working also.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Lol, I really don't think you have any idea what you are talking about. ZOMG, Sony! Panasonic! It must be good!!! I also doubt that you have ever heard of a PI/PO scan.

Also, the only discs I ever use are Verbatims and TYs. Cheap media is for the general dummy consumer population that does not do any research on their product.

the UJ-845 is really picky..don't waste your money on the Maxell DVD-R 8X because it only burns at 2X instead of 8X...

wait wait, slow down there, PI/PO?? whats that? something to do with in and out? EDIT ** dont worry read about it*

And what do you mean about cheap media. In what context are you talking? are you saying that cheap media often dont write properly, or are you saying that they can do damage to the drive?

    **EDIT **
just put my A6vc and the Z92 side by side and wrote the same data to the same media (imation printable CD-R) Both drives did it in exactally the same time! well within 1 second of eachother. But the Z92's drive made the grinding sound for the first half of the disk, But the drice on the A6Vc wooshed nicely. Interesting cos they are both made by the same cmpany but slightally different models.
