I think it's the current consensus that the G1 is the best performing (mainly for games) 15.4" notebook out there, chiefly because of its GeForce 7700..My question is should I buy this beast now, or will it be surpassed in the next two weeks by something better, Asus or otherwise?

I know tech changes very fast but so do clothes and just as it doesnt make sense to buy the latest thing right before the end of the season, it doesnt make sense to buy the greatest laptop right before a new model is released.

    Thank you for your help.

New Asus models won't show up until after the Santa Rosa launch, and then (if history is any guide from Sonoma in '06) not for probably 1-3 months after others like Dell/HP/Acer who will likely have something for sale within 2 weeks of launch. The only thing on the near horizon will likely be minor refreshes involving Vista pre-loaded and perhaps cpu upgrades; gpu's usually remain the same and nVidia is probably done with the 7 series notebook chips with dx10 just around the corner.

In the next 2 weeks, there will be no changes to Asus' current lineup. Vista won't even be on the shipping Ensembles until sometime mid-Feb at the earliest, per those around here who are in a position to know.

Best advice is to buy when you need it, and then don't look back..... there will *always* be something better and greater on the horizon -- 'tiz the nature of the business.

Real refreshes of the current model line won't start until the end of April. Expect G1/G2/V1/W2 updates no earlier than probably the end of May, or perhaps as late as the middle of June.

If you ask me the G1 has been "surpassed"... It's not the best thing out there, not even the best thing Asus has. It's a matter of the market it's aimed at and for the market it's a very good value for what you're getting. A new chipset will come out in April.

Right now the 7700 is the top line middle range gpu.

Its possible you will see the new middle range gpu in february.
