    Hi All,

I just got my A8Js...this baby looks sweet....anyways, I want to install XP Pro from scratch and reformat the drives and all.

How do I do that with Recovery CDs? Seems that they are just images and not actual installs.

Also, has anyone done 2 partitions in XP Pro..one for Data only and one for software? How does it work? Does it cause any problems?

    Thanx

Go through the process with the CDs until it asks for the drivers CD. When it tells you to insert it, do a manual/hard restart of your computer.

Or instead of hard restart, just wait a while - there is a timeout and it will restart itself in a while.

(sorry I only now saw the last question)
I "do" 3 partitions usually for XP Pro, one system (20-25GB), two data (roughly 40% and 60% of the remainder).

Note that you can partition the HDD as you want it prior to recovery, and then if you "recover to first partition only" it will not overwrite your layout. Just make sure you don't destroy the recovery partition when partitioning, it might come in handy later on.

Haha, I did the same thing reading-wise. I have my HD partitioned in the manner described and couldn't be happier.

If you have a c:\windows\i386 folder, you can try to create a real XP installer CD. I documented how I did this in http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=1523867&postcount=181.

    Hi all,

I just got a G1s and I'm trying to do a clean install. I put in the recovery DVD but I don't seem to be able to actually get the recovery process started. There doesn't seem to be any .exe file or something like that. I even tried booting with the DVD in to see it this gets the process started, but that doesn't work either. What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks!

Dunno how its with the G1S, but generally you have to set it in the BIOS with DVD drive as first boot device, pop in the recovery DVD and do a restart for the recovery disk to run..

Yes. Or press ESC once at the asus splashscreen, select from the popup menu the DVD drive, and that will boot from it.

Yep :) Very useful neat little feature. Don't need to roam through the BIOS every time you want to boot from another device; and then when you want to revert and make your HDD the first boot device, roam through the BIOS once more. Or else your flash memory stick boots up DOS every time you forget to remove it before rebooting. :)
