    Hi all,

I've been having a hard time finding any resources on how to take apart a U30JC. Mine has been making these loud grinding noises (I think it's the fan) so I've been wanting to take it apart to see what's the deal...but have failed thus far.

Any thoughts on the grinding noise?

Is the U36SD model close enough to be a guide?

to be honest most laptops have the same basic setup when taking them apart.

First you flip them onto their back and remove power/battery. There should be screws underneath the battery and hdd. Remove those and also remove the ram cover and ram/wifi. Then remove all the screws you can see from the bottom of the laptop. Make sure if they are different sizes you know which one goes where. When you have removed all of those screws, you flip the laptop back over and remove the upper case. Try to see if you can remove the keyboard before the upper case, but in this case it looks like the upper case is one whole unibody. So try to prop up the upper case but dont try to yank it off yet because there are ribbon cables underneath for the keyboard, touchpad, possibly speakers/power button. Once you have the upper case off, try to take the screen off now. There should be a few cables for the screen: for the screen, wifi antennas, and webcam. Now remove the screws for the hinges and the screen should come right out. Now you should have access to the board. Remove all the screws/cables holding the board in and you should be able to lift it out along with the cpu fan/heatsink.

Also the grinding noise does sound like its the cpu fan. It could be that the bearings went bad

If the grinding noise is only once in a while also consider the the hard drive. They will typically start to make a grinding noise when they are getting ready to fail. Back you data up soon if thats the case. If the noise is more constant it's most likely a fan.
