This is how to disable all* of the lights on the lid of the case.
*There will still be leakage from the LCD backlight, but it is very subtle and nowhere near the intensity of having the lights turned on. See my pics below.
Make sure the power is off and your battery is out. Step one is to remove your LCD bezel (thanks David for posting the disassembly guide). Remove the 4 rubber screw covers and place them on a smooth surface. The adhesive on them will probably only last through one or two removals if you are careful. The rubber strips at the top on either side of the camera only need to be peeled a little bit on their widest sides to expose the screws, don't take them all the way off. Once you have taken the 6 screws out, start prying the bezel off gently. There is some adhesive near the camera at the top of the bezel, you may want to use a credit card or something to pry it away. Otherwise you might flex the bezel too much and break it. Be very careful.

In the following picture I have the hinge covers off too, you don't need to do this, only the LCD bezel needs to be removed. Next, remove the connector from the gaming board (circled in red):

Put the bezel back on. No more lights.
When you unplug the game board the RoG logo turns white and is very very dim (leakage from LCD backlight):
I started playing with it:
If you want to keep the RoG logo lit normally like that, keep the game board plugged in, but remove all cables except the leftmost blue ribbon cable. To take the ribbon cable to the right out, push up the black plastic part to unlock it.

Lol....you snapped before I did
Is there supposed to be more than one picture in your post? I only see one. -

Thanks! What I'd really like to do is to remove the ROG logo from the lid, but it might make more sense to just paint it over. I'd love to do a half-silvered thing so that I can still have it light up on occasion when Clutch figures out how to control the LEDs, but straight black paint would do the trick as well.

I just wanted to be able to sleep at night
Getting rid of the logo would be sweet but if you disconnect the lights you won't really notice it since it won't light up. -
My bedroom has no computers, but I sleep pretty well anyhow.
I don't dislike the lights half as much as the ROG logo. I would have preferred that the Asus logo lit up, Mac style. -
Fascinating! I think it does disable the ROG light entirely, the little bit you see might just be a little bit of the LCD backlight leaking out?
This thread might be helpful to Clutch - if the LEDs pass through this data board, presumably there might be a way to control the board! Since removing the cable on the right turns off the horizontal LED (and presumably also the vertical ones), the behaviour of the horizontal LED is probably software controlled.
Has anyone ever reverse engineered direct console? -
Nice work ALLurGroceries.... this is an excellent thread for those whom wants to permanently disable those lights.
Thanks for sharing -

At least having the option in software lets you party out with the lights (G50 lets you turn them off with Direct Console, but the G51 does not). To me they are an eyesore.
Also the time between your reply and the previous one is 6 months, so you're gravedigging. But it is coincidental that I'm going to do this to my G51 that I just got yesterday.
Different strokes for different folks. At least I shared the info on how to do it. -
Though, really special people with too many USB cables make their laptops power custom (blacklight) LEDs. -
Bumping this since a lot of people (including me) are getting G50Vt-X5s as replacements for broken/black-screened G1S.
I don't care about the lid lights when I'm using the laptop, since they're not very bright and I can't see them anyway. But having them FLASH when you put the laptop into sleep mode? What was Asus thinking?
So, thanks for the instructions! -
Finally got around to doing this today. I didn't need to pull the bezel off entirely--I was able to disconnect the cable with the bezel still adhered around the camera.
In any case, what a relief! I can now put the laptop to sleep without having it blink at me all night. Thanks to the OP! -
A t-shirt or a book works great to INSTANTLY black out the sleep lights
