Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off

    Uncheck "Use the Welcome screen"

Forgot to add about the XP classic thing:

    1. Right-click on the taskbar, choose Properties
    2. Go to Start Menu tab
    3. Select Start Menu

Then change your Desktop Theme to whatever you want.

There's no way to "disable" login per se, since 2000/XP relies on the fact that there are multiple users.

So to have a default login [without having to reenter the password each boot up], you'll need TweakUI: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

TweakUI is one of many PowerToys by Microsoft to enhance Windows XP. In TweakUI, there's an option for automatic login under "Logon > Autologon". You set the user name you want XP to load with each time and save the password in it.
