Okay! So this is a problem that bugs me, especially when switching on my computer in class. It is this flickering ASUS logo and it plays a sound clip, and pretty loud. Most likely this can be disabled in bios, but my main concern is I cant reach the bios. Whatever hotkey I try out, I only get to the first boot device setup, which I used when installing a fresh win distro.
    Help please.

I usually have my notebook muted before turning it off (Fn-F10 on my A8Jm). Once you do that, it doesn't make a beep when it loads again.

Go to: Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices->Sounds

Change the sound scheme to "No Sound" to mute everything, or change in the Program Events menu so that "Start Windows", "Windows Exit", and "Windows Logoff" current sound setting is (None).

Are you sure? I have tried that one before myself and mine still makes the sound when I turn it on. I just started putting headphones in as it starts up so there is no sound that anyone else can hear.

Wizard: Which one of us are you talking about here? Mine or night_2004's ? :)

Just an addition: in my case, I mute the notebook both in Volume Control and the FN-F10 I described above before turning off.

Hmmm...those sounds are usually hard or unable to be turned off. It's one of those bios startup sounds. If it really bothers you I would try muting before going to classs or just shove headphones in and take it out once it passes that part.

various BIOS keys that I know of: F2, F10, F12, Delete (not backspace).

There has to be switch for this in your Bios, every computer I have built has a "splashscreen" switch in the bios. Can anyone tell him his bios key?

Ditto..... F2 will get you into the Bios and for all Core 2 Duo models..... if the bios tune doesn't drive you nuts, nothing else will...... All my old fashioned, but I don't want my boot up to make the intel tune... There's an option in there to turn that off... or just lower it if you'd like to hear it but not so loud..

Oh, you guys rock, that was driving me nuts too, it doesn't go off by using the mute before shutting down. Worked to turn it off in the BIOS though... :D

I was actually referring to your post, nights must havecome through just before mine. I have a f3ja so different models but I don't see why it would make much difference with this problem.
I have tried muting using the fn shortcuts and through windows itself but I still get the sound.

As ProPortable mentioned, you can turn off the chime that sounds with the ASUS logo via the BIOS. (More precisely, hit F2 when the logo appears until you enter the BIOS settings, then go under Advanced -> POST Sound.)

Okay! Ill try that. Some people here may not get it when I say startup sound. Its not the sound that plays after logging onto windows (which can be muted by muting before shutdown), but its a sound that plays 1 second after hitting the powerbutton.

edit: Putting headphones or whatever in does not affect this sound.

Thats very odd, I was referring to that same startup sound when I said that I put headphones in and it works for my laptop. The sound goes through the headphones and so no one else can hear it

I was referring to the startup sound after pressing power button, not the Windows thingy... muting the whole notebook seems to work for me,... maybe doesn't work for the F3 series somehow.

It doesn't. Only was I managed to disable to sound was to disable it in the BIOS, nothing else. Thats what daniel_RR should do if he wants to disable the sound, more specific instructions were given before in this thread.
