How to make FN keys "permanent" on Asus Zenbooks?

Hi there.

I like my laptop so far, but for the Zenbook, is there any way to put the FN keys permanent, like instead of having to hold FN and click f11 (for example) to lower volume, I can just click F11 and just do it?

I feel like it's a hassle sometimes just to try to lower volume, I have to use two hands. Sometimes I get mixed up and pause and have to think of what to do when a youtube video just blows loudly out the speakers because I get frightened and want to lower it quickly.

There is no FN lock on any ASUS notebook as far as I am aware. Sorry.

 

It could be done at the hardware level if the software level does not exists. Just depends how important it is to you.

As somebody that uses the fn+volume combo very often I found I got used to the fn key really quickly I dont even have to look for it.

You can also just set global hotkeys and set the fXX key to be volume up/down via registry or some software like foobar lets you set hotkeys.

 

then how about pressing the actual F11 key in other programs?!
btw you could use glue!

 

The fact is I don't. And that is a really dumb suggestion. If you need to use the actual F11 key, then you can hold FN and use it there.

The reason why the FN+Key is not practical, is because I have small hands and I don't get used it quickly. Like sometimes when I'm holding my laptop to class and want to mute the volume, I have to actually put it down and use both my hands. I tried stretching my fingers across the keyboards, but my fingers aren't long enough.

My older laptop had this same "problem" (for me) but that one broke after a while. The last two laptops I had, one had a volume scroller on the side of the laptop, and the other one had a touch area where you can change the volume by simply moving your finger across the bar.

Another issue was when I was browsing YouTube videos and passed by this video about a dubstep cat and the volume of the video was much higher than my volume set so with or without headphones, it was blasting. I figure most people would react quicker by pressing one button rather than hold one and press another.

My sister's HP laptop has the FN keys permanent so I thought it was a new thing with all laptops considering I figured changing volumes quickly and easily would be something people would do more than pressing F11 an F12, but I guess not

Yes HP lets you do FN lock in the BIOS.

AFAIK you would have to bind every Fn+Fx combo to a key using a utility, since Fn itself has no scancode.

Easy, just open the computer up and wire a switch onto the pins/traces for the FN key.

If you are SURE you want it to be permanent just short them. Can probably get away with a conductive pen/pencil and not need soldering.

However a more professional touch would to be wire a small button or switch to the key and install it under the laptop or on the side so you can toggle a hardware lock on/off at will.

 

as much as i'd like to have the fn lock on my laptop, i dont think it would work well. Think about it. If fn is always pressed, your volume, brightness etc. keys would work, BUT all the other fn keys would work as well. That includes the num pad which is located in the middle of the keyboard if your laptop doesnt have a standalone numpad. So while you are typing j or k or l. It would come up as 5, 6 or 7.

I don't have those numbers on my keys so I'm fine. My sister has it, but for her FN, it only works for F1-F12, it doesn't affect her alphabet keys.

 

Do NOT wire or glue the FN key permanently closed! Well, unless you don't mind losing your spacebar, C and V keys.

 

Pff. How is empty space ever going to help you do anything. Fuse the keys to the metal and be done with it.

 

Fn+NumLK (or Fn+Shift+NumLK) depending on the model.
