New battery just arrived. Anything special I need to do before installing and turning on my laptop? Should I run the battery calibrating utility upon first boot in the bios?

New batteries are basically worry-free. See the battery guide for info.

You should charge the battery to full on the first charge. After that, use it however you like.

How do you calibrate a battery? I heard you like charge it up all the way and then discharge it or something. How do you discharge it?

There should be a battery calibration option in the BIOS.

The complete calibration is usually two full cycles back to back - i.e. start full, drain completely, fully charge, drain completely, full charge.

I think the BIOS calibration only does one cycle: charge to full (read charge state of battery), discharge to empty (read charge state of battery).

In my experience, gained from owning 6 notebooks of various brands, allowing a battery to fully discharge will never do anything other than cause an immediate 5-10 per cent reduction in capacity.
