Had this laptop for a little over a year now and I think its time to update the bios. Having a couple of minor problems when starting up thats not the OS as i've just reinstalled Windows 7.

It shows a blank screen every now and then with a flashing white line on the top and I have to leave me finger on the power button to restart it, and after about 4 tries, it starts.

So I think its time to update the Bios. But i've never done it before, so can someone help me out.

Is it hard to do? and are there any cons with it?

    Thanks.

Works the same with every ASUS laptop AFAIK. See guide linked from my signature.

Hmm after reading that, i'm a little scared about the risks. What are the chances of it killing my laptop? And what changes will I notice?

    Thanks.

Perhaps I don't understand the reasoning, but didn't you say that you just reinstalled Windows 7, and doesn't that suggest that at some point Windows 7 worked with the currently installed version of BIOS until recently?

I could be wrong, but unless this problem has been there all along, I don't see how updating the BIOS is going to provide a solution. It could be that the BIOS needs to be reset, you need to make BIOS configuration changes, hardware failure, oxidation, overheating due to clogged vents or you need to update a driver of one kind or another.

My philosophy about updating the BIOS is don't do it unless you need to and more importantly the specific problem is addressed in the later BIOS description or that you have exhausted all other possibilities.

I'm certainly not trying to talk you out of updating the BIOS, I'm trying to understand the reasoning.

Yes, I was emphasizing the risks a lot in my guide, to counteract the over-willingness of many people to update their BIOS, breaking the principle of "if it ain't broken, don't fix it."

It's pretty safe really, I have never had a mishap doing it on all my ASUS computers until now. Just be sure to have enough power and DO NOT INTERRUPT THE FLASHING PROCESS.

None of this invalidates Kalim's question, though.
