How to use AFLASH2??

Did a search and came up empty so I figured I'd start a thread since I can't seem to use this program. I've read that ASUS recommends this method over winflash.Obviously I'm looking to update my BIOS.

I've downloaded the .rom file as well as the AFLASH2.exe however neither of these files came with instructions.

When I run the AFLASH2.exe file, I get an error message saying "Please donot(spelled just like that!) install EMM386.exe and Himem.sys" Press any key to exit.

Can someone please shed some light?

It's exactly what it means. Don't use a boot disk that has EMM386.EXE and HIMEM.SYS.

1. When formatting a floppy using Windows Explorer, check the Create MS-DOS boot disk option.
2. Remove all the rubbish files (ie: everything except for MSDOS.SYS, IO,SYS and COMMAND.COM).
3. Copy your BIOS and flash file.
4. Restart.
5. Make sure AC is plugged in.
6. Flash your BIOS using the BIOS flash program. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO THE PC WHILE IT IS FLASHING.
7. When it's done, restart by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL.
8. Go into BIOS and Load defaults, make changes, save, exit. Done.

 

Ok, but since I don't have a floppy drive, how do I create a boot disk, cd-rom?

What is the boot disk going to boot me into, DOS? Then what, run the aflash2.exe from the cd?

 

If you have the option to use winflash..............do it. It will make your life a whole lot easier.

Does winflash have a backup up option, to backup the bios before reflashing?

 

USB floppy drives are cheap. They go for about 15-20$ now. Always handy to have one.

A DOS application is less likely to crap out than a Windows one. WinFlash works, though I would recommend Aflash2 from boot disk instead. However, it's more likely to spook people since the majority of Windows flashing utilities will make the screen go goofy and freak people out. In that case, DO NOT TURN OFF THE LAPTOP EVEN IF THE SCREEN GOES SCREWED UP. It'll usually come back by itself.

If your BIOS has EZFlash, it might make things even easier. Load the file onto a USB key and run it from the BIOS, pick the file and it'll take care of the rest.

Anyway, doing a BIOS backup is somewhat useless, by and large because 1) they usually have past versions on the ASUS website, 2) you should be using the newest whenever possible, and 3) if it doesn't take, you'll have no real way of putting back that backup anyway.

 

So there is a chance I can screw the bios to no return and make this computer useless? Yikes!

There's gotta be a way to fix a broken bios no?
