Best 15incher for gaming out to date in my point of view, besides an np8662.

I really like the style of the new G51. The black and white scheme on my RX05 model is top-notch. Backlit keyboard is a must have after using the one on the G51.

Love the ability to have two HDD(in my case SDD!)

Wish the screen res on mine was better, but its allright.

It's powerful, but it runs hot.

Modding is fun in and of itself. Except peeling the stock thermal tape off the copper blocks. That was annoying as all hell.

Chiclet keyboard. Love it. Also it was a great price and it packs some real power.

    Like. No reservations.

I disagree. The msi gt628 supports quads and uses the much cooler gts 160m. From the benchmarks I've seen, the card is more then a match for the 260m in the asus. But they are all good laptops.

Really? Then were would the GTS 250M and GTS 260M fall?

The GTX 260M has almost twice as many processor cores as the GTS 160M.

Have you seen any GTS 160m benchmarks? My gt628 is coming tomorrow. I will post my results sometime Thursday.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_m_series.html nvidia puts the 260m gts on the same level as the 160m gts. (which now after looking at it doesn't mean much because they seem to think 9700m gt means high performance, lol).

The Geforce GTS 160M is pretty much a rebranded Geforce 9800M GTS so it'll fall behind the Geforce 9800M GT, Geforce 9800M GTX and the new Geforce GTX 260M which is an overclocked 9800M GTX. The performance difference between the GTS 160M and GTX 260M is about 40%.

the GTS 160m is also listed as in the High Performance category, the GTX(notice the X, not S..) 260m is in the Enthusiast Category.

Well so far I'm not a fan of my G51. I've battled newegg over an RMA because 10 min out of the box the sound stopped working. They told me I was dumb and it worked, and low and behold when I get it back, the sound was working... except when I started using it the sound stopped working again. ...about toss it off the balcony at this point.

I love it :D I'd have preferred the lid of the RX05, but performance wise, and overall feel when you're typing on it are amazing. It does get a bit hot, but with the asus warranty I'm not really worried. For the next 2 years I'm pretty much covered.

There is a revision of the G51 that supports quad and from what I have read, a gtx 260m is a gtx 170m. So how does a quad with a gts 160m compare to a quad with a gtx 260m. That is with the gpus running at NVIDIA stock clocks.

A more suitable comparison would be my G50 with a 9800m gs flashed to a 9800m gts.

    I have a X1A for a week now.

    What I like:

    - Full HD resolution. I was affraid of such a high res in a 15.6 screen, but after increasing the DPI in Vista everything looks great. There are some cases where text remains small, mainly in some websites, but Firefox has good zoom plugins, if needed.

    - 16:9 aspect. It is hard to get used to it at first, but works very nicely for programming in Visual Studio and Eclipse. Most web sites would not use all that horizontal space though.

    - Silent and runs cool when not gaming, can use it in on my lap without problems. I didn't do not much gaming yet to know how bad things would go with the temps, but I've already ordered 2 cooler pads in advance!

    - Smartlogon. OK, I know this is very poor as a security solution, but it does look sooo cool!

    What I don't like:

    - Wish the screen was bigger. The empty black area around the LCD is a huge waste of space.

    - LED lights. They are nice at first, but there is no way to turn them off so they can disturb you if you leave it in your bedroom at night downloading stuff. The worst part is that they blink when in stand-by, it's awful.

    - Speakers. Worst pair of speakers I've seen, my 5 years old and low-budget Toshiba sounds much louder.

    About the design:

    - The "alien" design looks very modern and well finished, but not appropriate for work mainly because of the damn leds. Can't see someone giving a presentation with those leds on.

Being a little picky, I don't like the "fake" ports in this laptop (modem, TV out and round "air intake" at the bottom), seems a cheap solution for case reuse.

All in all I'm enjoying my G51, but if I had to decide today I would probably go with the G71, that do not have the problems above.

Doesn't the G71 have blinking lights as well?

I think the G51 keyboard is really great. I always hear good things about it. Its one of the big reasons I want to get the G51 over the G71. Really wrestled between the two.

For the money I'll have left over if I get the G51 over the G71 I can get speakers, notebook cooler, external monitor and a pizza! :D

So the speakers in the G51 are really that bad?

The G51 also has a very disturbing heat problem while gaming too?

Does it go with gaming in Aion: The Tower of Eternity and Warhammer Online: The Age of Reckoning too?

I have the x2a and besides the fact that it came with the hard drive not attached i love it.

Only game i have been playing is fallout 3 but even after 3 hours of playing in max settings my gpu never got above 83. And with the placement of the vent i can even lay in bed and play unlike my last laptop which had the vents in the back and would burn a hole threw my legs.

I will agree with others and say the speakers are pretty crappy and although it doesn't really bother me, I can definitely see where that might be a problem for others.

Yes, but AFAIK they can be controlled by software. I don't understand why Asus didn't provide the same feature for the G51, or at least one single option in Bios to turn all lights off.

No questions here, in addition to the cool illumination, it's large and very comfortable.

I meant the G71GX-R05 from BestBuy compared to the X1A from NewEgg. Last time I saw prices were the same ($1300). But when comparing it to the G51VX-R05, yeah, you are right. And you could also get some pieces of black tape to cover the leds... LOL

    1. Haven't had any problems with it.
    2. It works the way a laptop should.
    3. I'd rather not have the lights on it but I get the feeling people look at it and think, "Stop haxn mah guvernmunt."

Eh, most people are able to cope with it. Just make sure the vents have unrestricted airflow and maybe consider purchasing a good cooling pad.

The G51 and G71 are more prone to overheating than pretty much all other models out there. But, to the credit of Asus, the temperature problems are a little bit better now than they were at the beginning of the production run.

I love the keyboard (like most of the other users lol) but i also love how easy this laptop was to overclock/undervolt/etc. I also may have gotten lucky but im able to push this lappy pretty (in my opinion at least).

I also love the aesthetics of the laptop. I love the lights (even tho the standby blinking can be annoying) and the design of the front. Even the inside looks just downright sexy to me. I also love those touch buttons up at the top (even tho mine dont do anything since i dont have all the drivers :p)

Happy to hear so many people love the keyboard. Considering the size of the laptop, with an included number pad, made me a little worrisome thinking it might feel cramped. But all the positive feedback is greatly reassuring. :)

It's a very comfortable keyboard. Some might be turned off because "it looks like a Mac", but, personally, I'm not so anti-Mac that I'll turn down something that I think is a positive.

I just got my G51vx-A1 today from my favourite reseller GentechPC, and so far I am more than pleased :D an amazing machine!

Unlike the best buy version I previously owned, this one felt much more...ready. No software or hardware issues since turning it on and all day of use.

I am downloading programs and games to get some benches, specially to test how good is the IC Diamond 24 thermal compound.

Current tests with stock settings allowed me to play demigod on full hd and high settings at playable fps (near 30 avg, but need to confirm). This is no fps so it was fluid overall.

So far, my first impresions are great, and I am loving the laptop. I am still debating if I should increase the DPI, because everything is so tiny! (I come from 1366x768 :p ).

I am going to write a review soon, and test a bunch of games (Demigod, Crysis, Left 4 dead, Bioshock etc) and some usual benchmarks like 3dmark06, vantage etc.

The 16" G60 will come out eventually, but it won't be any "better" than the G51.

Same here but looks like I just can't wait anymore ;) Slightly tired of playing on a Pentium 4 at 2.3 Ghz

Been trying to hang on to see if there's any news of a newer G60 coming out but if I go with a g51vx-a1 I will have to get it before Sept 15th for the $100 rebate. Need an announcement within days.

Hey anyone try ArmaII on a g51vx-a1 yet? Would really like to see how it runs.
