Hi there, My GF is thinking about buying a new notebook in march/april she's considering one of the lower specced DV4000 machines from HP (i.e. no dedicated gfx) are there any equivalent Asus notebooks? primary uses are Internet and Dvd Watching etc, nothing excessive. I'm set on buying a W3J when they're released and i'm worrying that when she compares her DV4000 to it she'll blame me for not advising her away from the HP...

I have to say your concern is well-founded: That seems like a very real possibility, and, if it happened, she, too, would have a good reason. Suggest that she may really end up kicking herself if she skimps on the video card. HP does have a fairly solid reputation, and, if her needs and desires don't line up with yours, I see no reason to push for much besides the video card.

Look at the Z63A! Same chassis and build as the W3J, but without the dedicated GPU. I have had mine for about 9 months now, and I have never even come close to needing a dedicated GPU. I have used it for DVD's, Photoshop, Office, basically anything a normal person would, but no heavy gaming (Doom 2 runs wonderfully
).
Anyway, if you steer her towards this instead of the HP, you'll get tons of loving!
Check out ISTNC, ProPortable, Geared2Play, C9Tech, StarPC's, etc. I bought from ISTNC and have nothing but great stuff to say about them. -
If dvd watching is a big deal i wouldnt get the z63a. The screen has a very narrow viewing angle makes watching dvds difficult and if its a dark movie the colors will invert because of the narrow viewing angle. The speakers are also not very good so you would have to get external speakers. Its a great laptop for most things just not movie watching.

Hey thanks for the resposes so far, all input has been greatly appreciated, but now i'm swithering whether to recommend the z63a
any other widescreen asus budget machines worth looking at?

The HP DV4000 is a 15.4" notebook. Asus has the Z70Va and Z81SP at the moment and an upcoming Z92ja, all with dedicated GPU's. I also believe the DV4000 is a glossy and has an option for an ATI x700.

Ill be honest the DV4000 is a pretty decent machine. At a good price. i mean you could look at the z71 or z70va but neither are glossy.

There are cheaper alternatives... like the A6 series which is also pretty decent.
Hp Equivalent
