    Hi all,

I received my Z70v about 3 weeks ago and love it, but there's a tiny thing bugging me and I'm wondering if anyone else experiences this. When using the touchpad on battery power, after i scroll down using the right side, a slight humming noise comes from about the center of the keyboard. If there's a decent amount of noise in the room you can't tell but if it's quiet you'll definitely hear it. Has anyone else had this "problem" (I guess annoyance is a better word) and if so what did you do to correct it?

    Thanks in advance

That sounds weird. Have you tried popping out the battery and then reinserting it? Don't know what else to tell you... reinstall drivers? That's what I would do.

Well, the Z71V originally had a hum coming out from the battery originally. A few BIOS revision released in order to fix it. No problem on it now.

Is this hum only in browser scroll or any windows?

In any window...it's weird, I don't think it's coming from the battery. I haven't gotten a chance to reinstall the drivers but I'll give that a shot tomorrow.

I did try popping the battery out and putting it back in, still no dice. I'll give an update after the driver reinstall tomorrow.

    Few questions:
If you disable sound/speakers does it go away?
    Is power4gear enabled?
Are you using any undervolting utils?
    centrino hardware control?
If you use an external mouse to scroll does it go away while touchpad disabled/enabled?
    Is this always constant hot/cold?
Does it do this when you scroll windows not using touchpad but by using the scroll bars?
    Any other details would help.

    center of keyboard.. hrmm
sounds like it could come from the video card, I know my video card used to give a slight "shriek" sound on my dell whenever I minimized a window. Never figured out what it was

Ok, I just reinstalled the drivers and the noise is still there. Actually it seems a tiny bit louder.

For Geared2Play - Here are the answers to your questions:

-It's still there when I disable the sound and speakers.
    -Power4Gear is not installed.
-I am using CHC to undervolt, but this was happening before I even installed CHC and began undervolting.
-I have it set so that when a mouse is plugged in the touchpad is disabled, so I'm not sure if that happens or not. I'm mostly concerned about it when I don't have a mouse plugged in.
-There's really no temperature difference anywhere around the touchpad or keyboard area that hasn't been there all along.
-It does not make the noise when physically clicking the left mouse button and scrolling with the scroll bars.

Thanks for your input so far.

I have the same humming problem and I just connected an external mouse and it seems to make the same sound when scrolling with the mouse. Using the scrolling key and just regular click and scrolling. This problem only happens to me when I view a folder or a website with lots of pictures so maybe it has to do with the video card or something?

If you use the scroll bar on the side it happens too then? Will get to the bottom of this. .....

Mine does this whether I use the scroll bar or just scroll the whole screen manually.

I just figured it's the GPU chugging along, whining about having to refresh a large part of the screen.

Its more of a high pitch sound than a hum to me. I would check the bio and stuff for you, but I am not quite sure how to do it.

Ok if someone here is willning to do the following:
Make a partition using partition magic.
Insall windows on it. Do not load any drivers other then the video card and required network drivers to access the internet. As i understand it this only happens while it son battery for everyone? Correct? Do not install anything other then the 2 required drivers. Please follow up on this forum,

Glad I'm not the only one with this minor annoyance. It's really not a huge deal, I just thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone else had the same problem and/or it could be a warning sign for a bigger problem.

Juno's right, it is more high pitched than a hum...I didn't really know how to describe it at the time. However, it doesn't make the noise when I scroll with the wheel on my external mouse.

The thread at notebookforum.com is saying the video card might be causing the problems and the only replacement might be a new video card, but I am not sure of this. Just trying to dig up some information to help out.

It happens on my M6Ne as well... I never really thought much about it though.

    I think it's harmless.

it also happens on my M5n, although on my case when i using the battery its just making those high pitch noise kind of a morse code. When i throttle down the CPU to the lowest setting the noise is not that loud but when i throttle it to the highest it is become annoying.. but this problem occured only on battery mode, and M5n does not have any dedicated GPU..

Well i researched it some more. It seems that the person in the thread on nf is correct about the coils. This seems to be the right answer as this was the exact explanation given to me by a electrical engineer who built nuclear reactors from ground up. Tho this should not be hapening while on ac mode soo we shall see. Juno's laptop is on the way back we will check it out and compare. Hopefully his is just an exceptional case as i am fine with mine which does make the noise on battery life (m5n).

Did you ever figure this out? My z33ae is doing this too. Very minor annoyance and only while in AC mode. Seems very random sometimes I will get the high pitched noise when i scroll, other times when i hit a key.

I just downloaded RM Clock and unchecked the "enable popup mode" option. This completely eliminated the humming.

*note: This humming did not occur while using Ubuntu 7.04 (feisty).
