F3Jc-APO4OP arrived today.
It has the worst elecrical coil hum ever, I mean, I cant stand being anyware near it.
Added to that, Its full to the gunnals with TAT, crappy software so the CPU is @ 50% charge all the time.
The actual exahust sounds like a hoover, and comes on very regularly.
The screens good, so long as you dont like black, in which case you get grey and white due to the light bleeding through.
Core Duo ?, LOL theres not much difference between it and my AMD Athlon 2400+.
This things a joke, it makes my 4 year old reconditioned silent pc look f****** amazing and still quiet, its almost as fast too.
-----------------------------------------------------
So all in all Im not very happy and its going back, I feel let down by Asus,
It looked so good on paper and has all the right ingredients.
It a shame because the touchpad and keyboard, bag, and mouse are all very good, it also runs very cool, if only the rest could have been so impresive.
£750 ?.............I wouldnt pay more than £500 for it in this state, and it still would not satisfy me, due to its high noise output.
-
-
Wow. That's really unusual. Sorry to hear.
-
My suggestion would be to remove all the pre-installed software (should fix performance issues) and undervolt with NHC (might fix noise issues) before you return it.
My Pentium-M is faster then my AXP-2500+ by a longshot.... -
I cant even do a proper disk format and clean windows install, as all Ive got is recovery cds, these are useless.
Btw, Its even worse, The hard drive wont allow Acustic managment via IBM Feature Tool, so the hard drive sounds like a nest of insects. -
first, the core duo was not meant to beat single core processors on single tasks. it is only when you multitask or use multithreaded applications that you can feel the benefit. also, make sure that your computer is configured to use dual cores by following the instructions on this page:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=74436 -
Try Notebook Hardware Control and set Acoustic Management to "quiet".
Hitachi hasn't been IBM for a while, so I wouldn't expect the IBM feature tool to talk to a modern Hitachi drive.... NHC acoustic management should work for any modern drive... -
Thanks, but Ive given up, this is not what I thought I was buying, You should not have to apply this many mods to a brand new notebook.
I also very unhappy about not having an "actual" real life usable copy of windows.
Its all packaged up back in its box and is going back to the store A.S.A.P. -
Any other laptop at the same price is going to have a lot of the same nitpicky issues.
No major OEM gives you a plain copy of Windows. -
In that case I need to go bare bones or Mac.
Bare bones does not bother me in the slightest as setting CPU's is a piece of cake and other than that, everything else clips or slots in, plus I get a full OS.
Mac on the other hand might be a whole new alternative ? -
I cant beging to explain how dissapointed I am in this not working out, It took ages to save the cash and the termoil of making that enitial system choice kept me up for nights on end. The actual feel of the system was spot on nice an clunky like a german car !, The bag I recived was also of a premium design and complimented the mouse which also worked very well and felt comfortable, as to did the touch pad, I was suprised how well i took to it.
It was cool enough to be quite comfy on my lap for an hour and the available screen angles were good. One of its best features was the Intel Wireless, It was very powerfull and gave me a "Very Good" signal with a full 54mb, it downloaded files @ 400/500 kbps which is plenty fast enough for me, this was also available in every room in a 4 bedroom house !
I would like to know what it was that makes the "Whine", It was coming from the very front of the unit / the touchpad its self. Very strange, becasue you had to directly face the screen to hear it, if you tilted your head to either side it was inaudiable ?
If I could walk into a store and pick up one of these that does not "Whine" and had an option for a "Real" OS, I would have no qualms doing so, It "Potentialy" was "That" good.
So close, but so far -
Sorry to hear that, I had almost the exact opposite experience when I got my ASUS. About the whine: I recently bought an I-ROCKS USB 2.0 hub, and the power adapter that comes with it has the same high pitched whine. It's kind of like the high pitch whine of your regular old fashioned TV set, except much more noticeable...at first that is. I set it down in my rat's nest of power cords and after awhile I don't notice it any more. However whenever I unplug it and plug it back in after awhile, I notice the noise again. Maybe you should prolong your exposure to the noise for a few nights?
-
Not really possible, As I only have 7 days to get a refund if Im not happy, and that has to include delivery times.
Im tempted to try the Hardware managment program mentioned on the previous page, but I genuinly feel sick and racked with worry about sending it back and going through all this again.
I wont soften to the noise, as it was the first thing I notices when I got it out the box and turned the power on, even before windows booted.
My heart sank, I was thinking oh no, thats coil hum, dont say this things got coil hum, and for all intent and purposes it looks as if it has.
Possible causes;
Power supply ?
Hard Drive ?
GPU ?
CPU Heat Sink ?
Microphone or Wireless / BlueTooth ?
Its deffinatly not fan noise.
Low resonance sound I can handle, but high piched is out of the question. -
Record the noise.
The noisest thing in laptops typically end up being optical drives which sound like a wind-up toy or an aircraft. Could also shake the unit a bit.
Or maybe the CPU fan, which usually sounds like a low-pitched vacuum or just gusts of air, depending on the design. Somewhat obvious, since the system will be running hot when it does.
Or you might be getting noise from the LCD, which might sound like a hissing or water-facet kind of sound. Try reducing the brightness to nil and see if that changes anything.
Maybe it's an AC adapter issue. Try unplugging AC.
If it's WiFi or Bluetooth, it usually disappears if you turn off those transceivers. In the short time I had my Z96Js, it didn't make any really noticable noise (and I've got really sharp ears). -
Thanks, I put it all back in box now though.
It may get a partial repreive in the morning while I try some of these sugestions.
It doesnt feel quite right though ?
If it were my PC my first though would be to turn the hard drive speed/acoustics down a bit, if its not that, I bet its "frequency noise" from a component. -
Geez, I feel sick now having read this thread. My f3jc-ap052p is set to arrive monday! I hope I don't go through the same feelings.
-
The whine is the CPU switching power states. It seems to be extraordinarily prevalent amongst CD/C2D. Have a look in the hardware forum - there is a thread there about it with something of a stop-gap solution.
-
If anything, I just think its bad luck that you happen to get a bad ASUS this time round. I am sorry to hear about such a bad first experience with it, as I am sure the ASUS was (and still is) a nice machine. Perhapes you could have better luck with a replacement model (instead of getting a refund so quickly)?
Good luck. -
Im sure iys the hard drive now Seagate ST98823AS, It does support acoustic managment in any form, I tried NHC and the A/M setting is not configurable.
Cheap ******* why cant they give you a decent drive ? -
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=macbook+whine+cpu&btnG=Search&****=
KThx. -
Its the crappy seagate hard disk, I changed the spindown to "1" with NHC and the noise dissapears completely when that kicks in, the noise comes back as soon as the disk spins again.
Seagate also has no utility for manualy adjusting AAM (automatic acoustic managment) on SATA drives.
This is infuriating, I really want to keep this notebook, But I NEED this hard disk noise fixed.
Ideas ? -
Send It back, Demand a Replacement.
Get a Model with a ATA drive!!! -
Im relly tempted to, 1: Send it back and "try" a straight replacment, incase its a bad disk.
or
2: Keep it and buy a decent dsik for it, Im losing out to the tune of £100 in that case, It would be worth doing though.
-
It really is worth it, if its a dud in the first few weeks any manufacturer or reputable retailer will replace it or refund you.
Its worth getting it replaced, you might get a decent one with no issues, and it won't cost you a cent. (except time wasted)
Moreover, if you then get another dud, second time round you really have grounds for your manufacturer bending over backwards to help you. For example they might give you a special deal on another model, or chuck you some freebies etc.,
Good Luck -
Thanks, Seems strange that seagate does not have the option of AAM on a breand new hard disk, and no other software I can find will enable it ?
-
Seagate Drives do not feature 'Acoustic management' following a patent infringement.
This is not what I need to hear, Who can "hack" the controls ? -
Ok a few things. Yes you can get a 'normal' version of windows without any extra programs. Just recover the notebook with the CD, then when it asked you to insert the asus driver CD dont! then restart the PC and magic, you have a normal copy of windows XP
2nd, yes I've noticed that my one Seagate HDD doesn't have that acoustic management either... BUT you wont find a more reliable HDD maker around hence the 5 year warranty as opposed to other manufacturers 3 years. Usually seagates are quiet anyway and perform mighty well (check benchmaks)
If the fan is such a problem I suggest you look into getting someone or modifying the .xml and .class needed to take control of the fan using Notebook Hardware Control
As for the whine, yeah beats me. If you can hear it and its annoying, I'd say its a problem that needs fixing/replacing.
Its a shame that you've been selected to get the asus lemon...
Good Luck
Insane -
No its the Hard Disk Thats the problem, They are complete rubbish.
-
OK I gave it a reprive, just to see if I could over come some of my initial dissapiontment, here is what I did;
1, Checked high and low for a utility to alter the acoustic output of the seagate drive, no use as there is no such utility available.
2, Created a back-up Xp Pro disk and used it to format the drive and do a "clean" windows install, this went well, with no glitches and I was able to perform all microsoft updates afterward.
3, After a few hours use, namely typing, I was shocked to find out that the whole left hand side of the keyboard dips when the keys are pressed, this is from the caps lock on the far left and across to the letter g, this includes all subsequent keys above and below also. When you type it makes a ratteling sound which is very annoying. The right side of the keyboard is firmly attached and makes no noise when typing. (The offending side sits over the cd/dvd drive, so I guess theres no support, hence why it dips and rattles.)>
4, There is a marked electrical hum/whine/noise when its on AC and charging.
5, REPRIVE OVER - THIS THINGS GOING BACK !
I Feel Sick @ My New Asus :(
