I am graduating from college, and may be moving around to find a job, so I am looking at gettign a desktop replacement that i can bring from location to location, and play video games with.

I have been looking around at laptops and it seems the Asus W90Vp-A2 fits what I want. The m70 from alienware, and sager 9280 are other modles I was considering.

    Questions:
    1) what was wrong with the W90 that made the delay of shipping? I seem to recal something about the video cards/hardware issues.
    2) Is there a newer model that may be released soon?
    3) Is there any other laptops I should consider as well, are the other ones I meantioned better? I like the quad core, 6 gig of ram, and the 18.4" 1920x1200 screen.
    4) I have read about issues with the drivers and gettign both GPUs to be recognized, is there soemthing I should know about this? I plan on getting windows 7 for the laptop.
    5) Why was there a price hike? I saw it at around $2200 before, but is it just the demand that raised the price?

    Thank you for your help.

    1) what was wrong with the W90 that made the delay of shipping? I seem to recal something about the video cards/hardware issues. driver would not install but some memeber here made a custom driver and bios to install any driver you want
    2) Is there a newer model that may be released soon? proably not
    3) Is there any other laptops I should consider as well, are the other ones I meantioned better? I like the quad core, 6 gig of ram, and the 18.4"

the OCZ Whitebook/ Alienware m17 is a 17 inch with those
    4) I have read about issues with the drivers and gettign both GPUs to be recognized, is there soemthing I should know about this? I plan on getting windows 7 for the laptop. it is currently fixed

    For 17"+
    *(sub-$1500 budget)*
    - Sager NP5793 (Clevo M570RU) .... its hot right now since Sager is making it fully loaded with 9800M GTS and even Blu-Ray drive to liquidate its stock so that they can focus on the new (but slightly more expensive) NP5797.... Clevo M570TU/ETU.
    - Gateway P FX with 9800M GTS is another good choice but does not have better build quality and cooling than the Clevo M570RU.
    - MSI GT725 .... fully loaded 17" with ATI HD 4850
    *($1600 to $2000)*
    - Clevo M570ETU (aka. Sager NP5797) .... new model with Montevina, quad-core and choice of GTX 280M or 9800M GTS/GT/GTX or Quadro 2700M
    - ASUS G71G-Q2 .... the Q2 makes the list since its fully loaded with Nvidia 9800M, Q9000 quad-core CPU, and Blu-ray drive
    - Arima W840 DI (aka. OCZ Whitebook, Alîenware m17, etc...) .... new 17" dual ATI 3870, quad-core and dual HDD
    *($2000+ budget)*
    - ASUS W90Vp .... 18.4" fully loaded with ATI HD 4870 X2 .... processor could be better (like a quad-core)
    - Clevo D901C (aka. Sager NP9262) .... 17" with single/dual 9800M GTS/GT/GTX or Quadro 2700M/3700M, uses desktop quad-core CPUs, three internal HDDs, and the best notebook cooling design to date.

I am looking for a higher quality build with the best bang for buck, I don't really have a price limit, but I would like to keep it under $2600 or so. What do you know about the new Alienware model? have any idea how much it will cost/what graphics card will be on it?

no real idea but im thinking its be a 18.4 inch and nvidia graphics and quad core

i cannot say pricing wise but its gonna be expensive ...AW is always a little over priced but its because the style and the name .... i would say wait and see won't hurt any thing :)

I was looking at the m70, and it hits the same price with 3870s, while asus w90 has much more for less, I have a feeling AW will be $3-4k, which I don't want to pay that much for a laptop.

I am tempted to pre-order the W90 to get in line...but after they are out for a bit, they may go back to teh $2200 range... so I am torn

Hmm, if the 4870s get DDR5... that may be worth waiting for, I may get in line to get the W90, and see if something else better comes out for around the same price, I can always cancel the pre-order.

that's what i thought, too.. but anything that comes out will probably need to be upgraded to have the same specs as the w90 (hdd, ram, optical, etc..), and companies like AW charge an arm and a leg for upgrades.. but as moo would say, you get cool flashing lights.

if you have that attitude about computers, you will never buy one! everytime you buy something, something newer and better is announced. it's better just to buy a machine that will make you happy for an extended period of time. check out some of my posts, because i asked a lot of the same questions, and made a lot of the same rationalizations you are.

my point - the laptops you could be waiting for may or may not be better, and if they are, it might not be by much. the w90 is a great price for its specs, and it is probably the best "bang for the buck." however, if you do not place an order for your w90 soon, you might be stuck waiting until they receive a next shipment (which could be another month down the line, after the 20th...)

I think the one Mr.Moo talking about is the Clevo M98XNU which is a DDR-1333 6G with Q9XXX and SLI GTX 280M + 3 HDD slot . Between W90 and that I would say the M98XNU will be better just because a slice faster ram and the GTX 280M , but here is the thing 4870 = RV 770, GTX 280M is just a 9800M upgrade. So performce wise it won't be a really big hike from W90 , but price maybe 300-500 more at least. So the W90 is a really decent notebook.

    I would say the next big hike is a 6 core I7+DDR3 1600/1800/2000 + GTX 3xx/ Ati 5xxx and most importantly ..SSD~~~~

And for the price hike ..I think it's because of the demand mainly but also parts and US dollar problem ...

no, newegg offers the x2 (which is a striped down version of the x1 with one hdd), and the a1 has a quad stock processor while the x1 has the duo.

    A1 you mean?

the W90p-A1 def seems to be the best bang for the buck. and for not much more $ (over the x2) you get the xtra's like blue ray player and more HDD space.

Are there any other differences other than the CPU, disk drive and less HHD space? I cant seem to find a side by side comparison of the A1 and X2.

    Yah, A1 I mean.

and i think the x2 is missing blue ray, has one 320gb hd, and may have a different proc, www.newegg.com is jacking the x2's price to $2449 even though it is the lesser version, might as well get the A1 from www.1toppc.com or www.xoticpc.com both are very reputable and will do anything they can to help you.

no difference other than the processor, hdd, and optical... the x2 is just a newegg version of the x1..

this is from the owner's lounge.. so it looks like it is possible some of these resellers will have even further delays ( and striker has some insider info and has noted this as being a very realistic possbility as well ).

Err, Stiker I beleive mentioned that people should wait for the may 20th release (implying some hardware alterations to increase preformance/reliability), so I wasn't sure if there was going to be a delay with the next shipment.

well, RMPG505's comments came straight from asus... and the a1 and x1 have almost identical hardware.

yes, striker said to stay clear of the w90's until the 20th (sort of easy because nobody really has these in stock); but, he also said that whatever issues are causing the delay could cause the shipment to be delayed even further.

striker's comments and RMPG505's comments seem to coincide, so i was just posting this to let people know that there could be even a further delay. i'd get your order in quick, because i know i haven't been waiting on the preorder list as long as others... and i've been waiting almost a month.

actually there have been a lot of RMA's... something with the video cards and screen flickering. the only place i have heard about these issues is from the W90 owner's lounge... and it seems to be true because they keep delaying shipment orders. that is why striker is saying to wait to buy until the next batch of w90's - as asus is working to fix these problems before they send out their next shipment.

I think it might have been primarily a bios issue, second to a few issues with hardware. I have ready reviews about people modifying some of the bios settings etc, I believe there is a forum discussing the "limit breaker" for the w90.

i'm pretty sure it was a problem with the video cards... i think people who were having problems with bios were just flashing their cards wrong. but whatever, doesn't matter what the problem is, honestly.. it'll be fixed by the next shipment.
