I guess when it rains it pours (literally). We had a storm and now my mobo is gone. To make matters worse I'm on the waiting list and have paid for a thus far non-existent w3j. I don't think I can go without a computer for a month. I don't know what to do. To make matters worse I had 8 1/2 pages of a paper done thats due Friday. Hopefully I'll have some luck putting my HD in a friends computer or I'm f'd bad.

Stuff happens I guess. I just hope I can get my paper back and get through the rest of this week and finals next week. I will worry about the computer and the w3j once I get the paper behind me. I don't really want to build a new desktop right now. I can't justify the expense with Vista/dx 10 coming out within the year.

well, if you're in the states, you could get a cheap hp from a place like costco (6-month return policy) or something and then return it once you get your w3j....

LOL. I thought about doing the purchase/return thing. But I don't wanna be that guy. Maybe Justin can just call Mr. Asus in Fremont and tell him to call Mr. Asus in Taiwan and tell him I need my w3j asap. I'm sure they'll be understanding and comply.

That sucks sorry to hear about your bad luck. I would buy a pc and return it later. but then again i have about 8 pcs in the house not counting enough parts to build three more i dont think i could end up in your position. Unless my house burnt down. "knocks on wood" oh wait i have a laptop in my car ok i dont need the house :)

Been there, done that, cried about it. That sucks man, I feel for you.

If you're going to try to RMA the motherboard (might as well try), make sure you don't try to boot off that hard drive from another computer or you'll screw up the HAL information and will have to format and reinstall if you want to try to use that hard drive again when you get the RMA back. Just install it as a slave (I assume that's what you were going to do anyway - but just thought I should mention it just in case).

If you get an exact replacement for the motherboard (or at least close) then you should be able to just fire the hard drive back in and be back exactly where you were.

Why don't you ask them (ASUS) to loan you a notebook?

Don't the schools have computers/laptops anymore? What about your local library...

Most schools and libraries would probably be pretty cranky if he tried to crack open the computer case and plug his hard drive in... ;)

Thanks for the advice. Of course I can use the comps at school but what am I going to do when school is out in a week? Go to my local library and play counterstrike? I think not ;)

We'll your on a comp right now, so at least you have access. My brothers comp is still out of comission and he has been game free for nearly 2-3 months. (He underwent gamers relapse) but you will definatly get over it, I mean its not forever.

I know it's a convenience issue with not having a computer at your place of residence, but still I feel for you.

Especially with a paper due soon. RAWR~!!!!!!

Check with your institution to see if you can rent a notebook or have one loaned to your free. You can always ask professors or TA's as they are very understanding and nice if you talk to the right ones.

My friend had a notebook loaned to her by her prof, NO it wasn't a male prof, hahahaha, the prof was female. The situation with her was that her notebook just freakin' died on her (Toshiba M60 or whatever the 14" new one). Luckily she had all her documents saved on a usb key. She lives very far from campus, York University, and it would really be a problem having to stay at school late in the pc labs typing up her essayS, so this one prof lent her, hers.

    WOW what a lady~!!!!!

It doesn't hurt to ask, not everybody is evil these days. :)

    Goodluck with your paper~!
    Mike

Yeah, that was pretty nice of her. I got my paper back so everything is OK. My computer was old and dying anyway (it has an AGP slot lol). But in the end it wasn't the mobo. I thought it was since the first PSU I tried didn't work. I got my hands on another from a friend and it works. Only problem is the fan on the CPU sprints for about 3-5 minutes when I first turn it on and if I tax the machine at all I get a really nice high pitched ringing sound. LOL the dog is going to love that when I get back home ;). I don't think I'll tell Justin it was just the PSU though, I still want him to call Taiwan for me and tell them to send my aptop some time this week lol ;).

Don't the schools have computer labs anymore? An external HD enclosure from CompUSA can be had for ~$25.
