I've recently gotten cold feet about ordering my new e1520. I like the configuration, but I'm not crazy about the size/design of the new dells. I'm looking for a 14-15" laptop that I will be using for school and gaming, and the new e1520, with the 8600m gt, fits the bill pretty well. However, I always see people talking about ASUS laptops, which is a brand that I haven't heard much about. I'm wary about buying from brands I don't know much about, since I bought my previous PC from a company I found in PC Gamer, which subsequently went under, taking my warrantee with it.

Basically, I'm wondering about how reliable ASUS machines are, and what the company itself is like. What are the warrantee plans like? Are they anything like Dell's? Finally, what computer would you recommend from ASUS?

    Thanks!

You can read a bit in the "Frequently asked questions" inside the "ASUS Information Booth".
For more info, ASUS N.A. has an excellent support.

You may not have heard of Asus, but they're big. Basically, the 'branded' manufacturers like Dell and Apple, etc. outsource the production of their notebooks. The people who REALLY make the laptops you buy are companies like Clevo, Asus and Compal. You can pretty much bet that they won't be going under any time soon.

Asus will be far more reliable than the last brand you bought from, you can't go wrong with them. :)

Asus is one of the largest and most well-known notebook maker in Taiwan. Taiwan, of course, is the center technologies. Unlike Acer, however, Asus does not not really try to enter the North America market. This why that the brand is less known in the US (excluding this site ;) ). I assure you that Asus will not be inferior to any well-known brand in the US. In fact, Asus notebook tends to be more well-built. I've compared my dell 6000 to a W3, and the difference in design and quality is just indescribable. If you check trusted resellers like newegg, you'll notice that Asus notebooks have the highest ratings. Furthermore, Asus usually offers 2 years of standard warranty on its notebooks vs. 1 year standard offered by Dell, HP, etc. If you're looking for something similar or better than the e1520, you can check out the recent F3 review on the front page. You can also check out the "hot" C90 that Asus fans have been discussing for the past few weeks. If you are willing to spend about $1800-$1900, than you can consider G1S. For 14-inch models, A8 series is fairly well-built and there is a LOT of different configurations. There is also a rumored F8 that will supposedly bring high-end graphic to 14-inch santa rosa models.

Lastly... Welcome to the Asus community!

I had not heard about ASUS before I joined this forum. I had the Dell 1505 / 6400 on my mind. Just got my ASUS F3SV and thrilled with it. Quality product.

I will recommend it. It comes with 2 yr int. warranty

But it has 8600 GS. ASUS G1S has 8600 GT.
