What's with the graphics card? Shouldn't they be able to fit a 9800M GT in there? Seems possible, since the G50 has the 9700M GT.

yeh, it sucks that they have only the 9700gt.... they could easily fit a 9700gt SLI in a 17 inch package

i think the company dont really know the official specs, the specs posted on their website are actually the g70's with the dual 8700s changed to the 9700.

    Thanks Mate,

I have an Uncle who is right now in the UK, he'll be back home in about 1 month, can you tell me where I will get this laptop with the same configuration as that of GenTechPC ASUS G50V-A1,

    Kind Regards,

Like the crimson a lot better than flamer-orange. Media touchpad is a plus. But the graphics card seems the killer. Isn't that midrange?

If they can put a 9700M into it why can't they put a 9800M into it? Is the 9800M that much bigger physically? Or is it about power consumption?

I don't know, but reading about the Gateway 7811-FX with its 9800 and just how awesome its benchmarks are really makes me wish Asus will put the same in.

It makes a huge huge difference, playing COD4 at 1920x1200 native on this Asus would be amazing, which is what you can do on the Gateway.

Yeh I would buy the Gateway 7811-FX if I lived in the US. I live in Australia so my choices are soooo limited. All I want is a laptop with

    1. WUXGA 17inch
    2. Numberpad on keyboard
    3. 2 hard disk bays
    4. 9800M or equivalent.

The Gateway 7811-FX is all that and CHEAP!

In Australia so far (that I have found) the only laptop that fits all of those 4 criteria is the Clevo D901C. I'm still tossing up whether to buy it. The only other laptop in Australia I have found with a 9800M is the Clevo M570TU but that only has 1 hard disk bay and I am considering that one also.

In the US you get the Gateway 7811-FX with everything I want for a bargain! SUCKS!

If the Asus g71 came with a 9800 it would be a no brainer. But I bet if it did it would cost $1000 more (Australian) than the Gateway.

This Asus M70VM-C1 would be perfect if it had a 9800M in it - except it has a weak video card (9600M GS DDR2)

It does produce much more heat actually but its not the size/heat being the reason I am really sure its cost factor.

The Gateway has NOTHING to compare to with the G50/G70 in terms of quality or components except the GPU, they sacrificed every single thing on there to keep its cost low and have a high end gpu. The Asus has a mid range gpu but all the other parts are high end and top class.

They know there is a larger market for people needing a mid range semi affordable notebook for gaming on the go than those who are willing to spend $2500+ for the high end gaming setups.

I have a desktop to do my 1920x1080 maxed out gaming on, I just need the g50 to hold me down when I am on the road, and I do much more than just gaming. I do music/movies, photoshop, video editing, internet. No way would I give up the goodies this unit has just for the better gpu.

Plus Asus is smart enough in most cases to not have redundant models, they do have the unit with the dual gpus for high end gaming.

I just wish I had the choices you have in the US. When I see that you have laptops like the Gateway that are so cheap and relatively well specced it just makes me green with envy. Sure Asus is a better computer but you pay for it. I just wish I had the choice! I only have expensive options and few of them at that.

    Kind regards

what is the Asus release/deployment strategy? i.e. will they release the X9100 or the T9400 models first? or do they typically put all their options out at once? or does it depend on the reseller/retailer?

some sites (UK) have the T9400 out in September; others have the more powerful CPU options. but no site i've seen has options to choose.

if the UK gets it in September, is that a signal for a global release? i.e. will North Americans get this sweetness at the same time? (the warehouse/distro sites i peek at don't have it listed ... yet.)

not much info, but this was just passed to me now:

Metro Vancouver area suppliers are expecting the first shipment of G71Vs no sooner than late September (argh! such a long wait!), so definitely no "back to school" specials on this one. no info yet on configuration options or pricing, but looks to follow naming structure to other lines: an A1 and A2 are expected.

(but with support for six cpus in the line-up, how will ASUS decide what goes where, and when?)

nope ... no M70VM, not yet anyway. as it turned out, when i went to buy a couple of days ago, my supplier told me OOS, backorder. which is actually perfect, as now i'm waiting to see how the G71Vs turn out.

i'm actually in the same boat as you. if ASUS would only upgrade the video on the M70VM, i'd feel better about that purchase. so here's hoping the G71V has some sweetness in store.

plus: can't wait to show up at a design meeting with a red-trim Republic of Gamers notebook amidst the sea of white MacBooks! lol!

I was interested in this G71.
I am in the USA and will return to Europe in some months so i want a reliable laptop. I am suspicious of the Gateway (it's specs are too good to be true for that price) and i think they don't have support in Europe while i can get support for Asus there i believe.

    http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=74&l3=763&l4=0&model=2415&modelmenu=2

This is the specs for the Asus G71V directly from Asus. It does NOT have DDR2 as initially reported in an earlier post on Asus' site in August. It seems to feature DDR3. The important selling points in my opinion is that this is the ONLY laptop that seems to have DDR3, a very good graphics card, and option for quad core (mobile version) for a decent price. While I have not seen any places offering the quad core, it may be out during release. I read some places reported 9/25/08 for release date, and others say end of September (which is 9/25/08... right?). So I would say between 9/25/08 and 10/01/08. I am really excited about this laptop.

Does anyone know if the screen is going to be as nice as the G50? The G50's screen was the nicest one that I saw at Best Buy, and the G71V is supposed to have full 1080p HD...

The later rendition of G71 is rumored to feature a more robust graphics engine than 9700M GT. The last time I heard is somewhere in the range of 9800M.

I would also like to echo Vicious here. I bought a Gateway P7811 FX for my brother for his college, and it hasn't been working as expected. The laptop refused to install Battlefield 2, and other various games. In fact, the only games playable on the laptop were Halo 1 and Oblivion. Talk about a 1.5k paper weight that can't run the game of your favorite.

On the other hand, the G50V I have now (borrowed :p) has been working perfectly for the past weeks. I played Crysis (although slow), COD4, GRID, UT3, CC3, and it performed superbly. Its battery life is pretty impressive too. I once got 3 and half hours from it under battery saving mode, when doing some word processing and light web surfing.

In short, from my experience, ASUS's ROG gaming laptop is much more reliable than Gateway's counterparts.

Where did you found those rumours about the graphic card?
I would love to know if that is confirmed.
Anyway, i decided to go for a Toshiba X305 (great sound system) after it gets a Nvidia 9800 GT or to the G71!

The Gateway laptop seems to be giving problems to loads of users and i don't want to risk.

Do you guys know if Asus provides worldwide warranty? I'll buy the laptop here in the USA but i will move back to Europe so i wanna know if they will give me support over there.

I think the G70Sg will feature dual 9800, when a G71 will feature only one.

@ Gaugamela: Yes, ASUS offers 2 year global warranty, with overnight night shipping to and from the repair center.

EDIT: G70Sg will feature a 9800M GTS (GS), where G71 will feature a 9700M GT.

I would disagree with that. Given that G70Sg has only one graphics card, I would think it will cost around 2000 bucks the most.

If not, you can always look for the Best Buy version.

Btw, the G70sg looks to be a G71v + 640gig hdd instead of 400gb hdd + 9800M GT. It also has the aluminum finish from Asus's top gaming series, the G70.
It will probably be around $300 more than the G71v.

    Hi OniShiroX,
I preordered a G71G-A2 advertized by ASUS and its resellers: BTOtech.com, EXcaliberpc.com, GenTech Computers and RED BARN Computers as having a PM45 +ICH9 chipset on the motherboard but came with a P43 +ICH10 chipset. Also was supposed to ship with 1333 Mhz DDR3 SDRAM but came with 800 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM. The PM 45 chipset is the cutting edge while the P43 is the low budget bottom end chipset. Whats up with that?

Definately some dissapointments but overall, the machine seems to be an excellent deal. Compared to the Alienware m15x I almost bought, this thing has more bang for the buck for a $750 - $850 savings. The Alienware beats it only in Graphics card (and not by that much in my opinion) and lighted keyboard.

As for the chipset, I agree there is way to much confusion on the net concerning the specs, but as for "cutting edge", it was released in June 08 just like the P45 and though I do not know the exact release date of the PM45, I assume it was around the same time as the above so it can't be that much more "cutting edge".
